(My Sportsbook) - Brett Hull was honored prior to Sunday's game against the NHL-leading
Ottawa Senators with a gold-plated stick for recently notching his 700th goal and 600th assist.
Hull then went out and did what he does best and that is produce points, as he registered his 32nd career hat trick and assisted on another goal, leading the Detroit Red Wings to a 6-2 victory over the Senators at Joe Louis Arena.
Detroit is 15-1-0-1 in its last 17 games and has won its last eight at home. The red-hot Wings also vaulted past Dallas into the top seed in the Western Conference playoff chase and moved within two points of Ottawa in the race for the best record in the NHL.
"I think we started doing the things we're supposed to do," said Hull, who along with linemates Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk have combined for 71 points in the past 17 games. "Some line combinations began to click and we started doing the little things."
Curtis Joseph made 41 saves for the Red Wings, who have won four straight and 12 of their last 13.
"The story was Curtis Joseph," head coach Dave Lewis said. "It was one of those games where you look at the stats and you go 'what happened?' -- but we won the hockey game."
Brendan Shanahan and Zetterberg each added a goal and an assist for the Wings, while Nicklas Lidstrom also found the back of the net. Pavel Datsyuk had two assists in the victory.
After Mike Fisher tied the game for Ottawa at 9:32 of the second, Hull scored his second goal of the night just 1:15 later to give the Red Wings the lead for good. Zetterberg forced a turnover in the Ottawa zone and Hull fired a shot from the left circle past Patrick Lalime for a 3-2 lead.
Zetterberg then scored his 19th goal with 4:21 left in the period. He took a feed from Shanahan and snapped a shot from the left circle hash marks past Lalime.
The Wings scored three times on just four shots in the second period.
Shanahan scored his 28th goal on a shot from the left circle to make it 5-2 at 5:02 of the third and Hull completed the hat trick in the final minute when he ripped a one-timer from the slot.
"It's a thrill to score anytime," said Hull, when asked if hat tricks are still exciting to him. "No matter where, no matter when."
Hull, who has 33 goals this season, notched his first hat trick since January 26, 2002 against St. Louis.
