(My Sportsbook) - Some people have speculated that this could be the final season in the legendary career of Patrick Roy. On Thursday, Roy showed that he is still one of, if not, the best goaltenders in the league and any planning for a retirement party might be a bit premature.
Roy posted his fourth shutout of the season to help his Colorado Avalanche to a 2-0 victory over the San Jose Sharks at the Pepsi Center. Roy made 29 saves to record the 65th shutout of his career.
"We didn't skate (Wednesday) and then nothing this morning," Roy said. "I just wanted to have a good warmup and make sure I was ready for the start of the game. Making a few good saves at the beginning of the game put me in a groove."
This game was originally scheduled for Wednesday, but was postponed because of a blizzard that left snowdrifts of five feet in Denver.
Bates Battaglia and Adam Foote each scored goals for the Avalanche, who snapped a two-game losing streak. Colorado is two points behind St. Louis for fourth place in the Western Conference.
"It was a big two points for us," Foote said. "Having this delay, we were kind of worried how we would start. We hung in there, and Patty made some big saves for us."
Battaglia gave the Avalanche a 1-0 lead at 13:47 of the first period. Colorado put on a passing clinic on the power-play goal. Martin Skoula took a pass at the point and sent a quick pass down low to Steve Reinprecht. Reinprecht wasted no time and snapped a pass to Battaglia, who redirected the puck past Miikka Kiprusoff from the front of the crease for his first goal in an Avalanche sweater.
"It was like getting a monkey off my back," Battaglia said. "I'm glad to get that first one, and hopefully it'll start rolling in now."
San Jose had a frustrating second period, firing 16 shots on net, but Roy stopped everything thrown his way.
The Avs pushed their lead to 2-0 on Foote's goal at 2:57 of the third period. Eric Messier fed a pass into the high slot for Foote, who blasted a shot on net. Kiprusoff made the save, but the puck slid right back to Foote and this time he fired a slap shot between the goaltender's pads.
"Making a few good saves at the beginning put me in a good way, and I was moving well," Roy said. "I thought we were sharp killing penalties, and that's something we're going to need to keep doing well into the playoffs."
WHAT'S AHEAD
The Avs will wrap up a brief two-game homestand on Saturday against Chicago before starting a two-game stretch away from home.
