Kansas City, MO (My Sportsbook) - The Kansas City Chiefs announced Thursday they were pulling their request to host the Super Bowl in February of 2015 because of faltering plans for a rolling roof. It was in early March the NFL announced that Kansas City would host Super Bowl XLIX, contingent on the renovation of Arrowhead Stadium. That would have given Kansas City the longest lead time in history to prepare for the Super Bowl, and only the fourth cold-climate city to host the big game. The rolling roof was one of two ballot measures that county officials put before voters in April. One included a 3/8-cent sales tax increase to raise at least $425 million to pay for the work to the stadiums at the Truman Sports Complex. Jackson County officials withdrew a resolution to put the rolling roof project on the August 8 ballot. Voters passed the 3/8-cent sales tax measure last month to renovate the stadiums. "The business community, the political leaders at both the city and county levels, the Royals, and most importantly many of the citizens of Jackson County all showed some support - from time to time -for the rolling roof," Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt said. "However, at this point, it is the Chiefs determination to move forward with the Arrowhead renovations without a roof and consequently we have today withdrawn our previously-granted request to the NFL for the February 2015 Super Bowl. This also means that any Kansas City bid for a future NCAA Basketball Final Four or a Bowl Championship Series college football game will be deferred until circumstances are right and future community leaders take the initiative."
