Mansfield, OH (My Sportsbook) - Ron Hornaday Jr. captured Saturday afternoon's City of Mansfield 250 Craftsman Truck Series race. The No.33 Kevin Harvick Inc. Chevrolet crossed the finish line 0.961 seconds ahead of Jack Sprague.
The victory was Hornaday's first of the season and series record 28th of his Craftsman career.
After rain canceled qualifying on Friday the leader in owner points, Todd Bodine, led the field to the green flag.
Bodine maintained his lead on lap one with Ted Musgrave and David Reutimann following in second and third, respectively. On the next lap they started to pull away from the field.
While Bodine continued to lead the race the second caution of the race came out on lap 25.
When the pits opened under this caution Sprague, who was running in eighth, was the only driver in the top-10 to stop. He came out of the pits in 31st position.
Bodine continued to be dominant up front as he increased his lead. A spin out by Kelly Sutton brought out the third caution of the afternoon.
During this caution all of the top-10 drivers took pit stops except Bodine, Musgrave, and Reutimann who were the top-three drivers. After another caution on lap 47 Reutimann, who was running in third, stopped for fuel and tires.
As the cautions piled up one after another Bodine and Musgrave continued to stay on the track. On lap 99 the third-place driver, Erin Crocker, spun out to bring out another caution.
After leading every lap of the race up to this point Bodine finally came down pit lane on lap 115. His teammate, Musgrave, came into the pits one lap later. Bodine returned to the track in 28th place, Musgrave in the 31st position.
The No.33 KHI Chevrolet took over the race lead after Bodine and Musgrave's pit stops.
With the race half-way over, 125 laps, the top-five read: Hornaday Jr., Bill Lester, Sprague, David Starr, and Joey Miller.
It didn't take long for Sprague to pass Lester for the second spot. And when the next caution came out on lap 152 Sprague was right behind the No.33 truck.
Hornaday Jr. led Sprague, Starr, Miller, and Johnny Benson as more cautions came out.
During each restart Hornaday Jr., Sprague, and Starr pulled away from the field. It was obvious with all the cautions taking place that one of these drivers would win the race.
A record-high 18 cautions allowed for only short green-flag runs. This gave Hornaday Jr. a clear advantage as the laps dwindled to just a few. After the last caution the race was restarted with just 11 laps to go.
A great restart by Hornaday Jr. allowed him to pull away from Sprague and Starr once again. With no more cautions over the last laps, the No.33 Chevrolet crossed the finish line with a comfortable margin.
Starr, Benson, and Miller completed the top-five.
Appearing in his first Craftsman Truck race, the former Boston Red Sox's outfielder Mike Greenwell, finished in 26th place.
Bodine, who finish in 15th place, one in front of teammate Musgrave, expanded his championship lead to 20 points. Reutimann is third, 106 points behind Bodine.
The next race in the Craftsman Truck series is set for Friday, June 2nd at the Dover International Speedway.
