Houston, TX (My Sportsbook) - Houston Rockets head coach Rudy Tomjanovich will be out indefinitely as he begins cancer treatment on the surface of his bladder. The 54-year-old Tomjanovich was expected to rejoin the team for Wednesday's contest with the Lakers, but announced that he has decided to take a leave of absence as he starts weekly treatments. The Rockets are 2-3 under interim coach Larry Smith. Houston's head coach since the 1991-92 season, Tomjanovich has coached 883 career games. The next time he is on the sidelines he'll tie Don Nelson for sixth all-time for the number of games coaching the same team. Nelson was on the bench for 884 games with Milwaukee from 1976-87. His absence marks the first time in Tomjanovich's 11-plus seasons as Rockets head coach that he has not been on the bench for a regular-season contest.
