Bourdais wins record fourth straight Champ Car race

West Allis, WI (My Sportsbook) - Sebastien Bourdais captured Sunday's Time Warner Cable Road Runner 225. The No.1 Newman-Haas driver crossed the finish line 3.612 seconds ahead of Justin Wilson.

The victory was Bourdais' fourth of the season and 20th of his Champ Car career. It is the first time a driver in the Champ Car Series or its predecessor CART has won the first four races of the season.

After one false start, the race got underway with Bourdais bringing the 16-car field (Alex Tagliani did not start following a crash on Saturday) to the green flag for a scheduled 225 laps of oval racing.

The action began almost immediately as Paul Tracy, who started 10th, tried to quickly move through the field. He was up to sixth by lap three when his Forsythe Championship Racing teammate Mario Dominguez tangled with Bruno Junqueira and Tracy was collected in the incident.

"It's a shame, he (Mario) just drove into the side of Bruno," said. "I was making a move on the outside of him and he went to the inside and just drove in way too hard...We has a good car today and we come out of here with nothing, it's frustrating."

All three drivers were done for the day.

Bourdais continued on leading the first 20 laps before he had a tire problem and had to pit under green. It left the defending series champion down a lap to the leaders.

A.J. Allmendinger inherited the top spot, but after the first round of pit stops, Wilson moved in front of Allmendinger. Both were behind Katherine Legge, who did not pit, but not for long.

As they came up on slower traffic, Wilson used the bottom of the track to his advantage and got the lead from Legge.

Bourdais, in 10th place, pulled ahead of the leaders to get himself back on the lead lap. He charged past Jan Heylen for ninth place, but was still more than 17 seconds behind Wilson.

Bourdais, the pole winner, was still on the move, getting by Charles Zwolsman for eighth place with still 175 laps to go.

Nelson Philippe scrapped the outside wall on lap 53 to bring out the caution flag. Bourdais, off sequence with the leader, pitted from seventh place as did Legge. The remainder of the leaders stayed out during the caution.

The restart on lap 71 saw Bourdais look very good. He slid under Will Power and Philippe into fourth place, just four seconds behind Wilson.

But Wilson was putting down some pretty good laps too and his lead over teammate Allmendinger quickly expanded to more than three seconds.

On lap 89, Allmendinger got off line and was passed by Oriol Servia, Bourdais and Philippe.

Bourdais had to fight off a challenge from Philippe to maintain third and as the drivers approached the 100-lap mark, Bourdais put a car between himself and Philippe.

The two-time series champion then set his sights on Servia and passed him on lap 99 for second place. When Wilson pitted on lap 100, Bourdais inherited the top spot for the first time since his early tire problem.

The second round of three pit stops began under green and everyone except for Bourdais and Legge pitted leaving them first and second, respectively.

Legge couldn't keep up with Bourdais, who put her one lap down on lap 114. That left Bourdais as the only car on the lead lap (although he still had one more pit stop to make than everyone else).

Bourdais made his stop on lap 129, a clean one, and he maintain the race lead. He held a 10-second margin over Wilson and everyone else was one lap or more down.

With numerous cautions during the first half of the race, the race would end on time and not go the full 225 laps.

Bourdais and Wilson pitted for the final time and the Newman-Haas team was extraordinarily quick. Allmendinger and Philippe stayed out and joined the top-two on the lead lap making it a four-horse race.

Philippe and Wilson battled side-by-side for second and that allowed Bourdais to pull out to a 1.780-second lead on the first laps of green flag racing. The margin continued to expand, to 2.301-seconds after 170 laps.

It appeared that the race would only go 197 laps due to the series time limits.

Bourdais was not letting up or coasting at all. He kept the margin to 2.185 seconds with 14 laps remaining despite Wilson using up his "push-to-pass" button.

Without the additional power, Bourdais began to expand his lead as the laps dwindled down to just 10 to go. He cruised to the checkered flag unchallenged.

Bourdais' win gives him a 31-point margin over Wilson after four events (136-105).

The next race in the series is scheduled for Portland, OR on Sunday, June 18th.
