Atlanta, GA (My Sportsbook) - The Atlantic Division-leading
New Jersey Devils try to extend their unbeaten streak to six games tonight when they visit the
Atlanta Thrashers at Philips Arena.
New Jersey is 4-0-1 in its last five and, with 100 points, remains three ahead of second-place Philadelphia in the divisional race. Both teams have five games left, with the Flyers being idle this evening.
On Thursday the Devs skated to a 2-2 tie in Tampa, as the Lightning's Vincent Lecavalier forced the stalemate with 5:25 left in regulation. Patrik Elias and Pascal Rheaume scored for New Jersey, while Martin Brodeur made 32 saves.
Brodeur was denied his 40th win of the season, thus preventing him from becoming the first goaltender in NHL history to reach the plateau four times. Hall of Famers Jacques Plante (1955-56, 1959-60 and 1961-62) and Terry Sawchuk (1950-51, 1951-52 and 1954-55) are the only other backstops to have hit the mark on three occasions.
New Jersey, which trails Ottawa by five points for the best record in the Eastern Conference, moved to 15-0-4 on the road when leading after two periods. The Devils, 11-2 on Fridays this season, will wrap up a four-game swing tonight before hosting the Islanders on Sunday.
Atlanta, meanwhile, has won two of its last three games, including Wednesday's 5-1 pounding of visiting Carolina. Dany Heatley finished with two goals and two assists to lead the way for the Thrashers, who improved to 14-19-3-3 at home. Ilya Kovalchuk, Jeff Cowan and Chris Tamer also tallied, while Pasi Nurminen finished with 29 saves.
Heatley leads the team with 77 points and is tied for the club lead in goals with Kovalchuk at 36. Heatley's point total breaks Ray Ferraro's single-season team record of 76, which was set in 2000-01.
The Thrashers will open a three-game road trip Saturday in Nashville.
Atlanta is 2-1 against New Jersey this season, having won the last two games. The Devils, however, are 10-3-2 in the all-time series and 5-1-1 at Philips Arena.
