Kansas City, MO (My Sportsbook) - The
Kansas City Chiefs announced on Tuesday that they have signed offensive tackle Kyle Turley to a two-year contract. As per team policy, the terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Turley, 30, has been a marquee blocker over the course of his pro career, but missed the past two seasons with back problems.
"We are very pleased to acquire the services of a player of Kyle Turley's experience and stature," Chiefs president Carl Peterson said. "We were very impressed with his recent workout for us and are confident he is ready to resume his NFL career. He will compete at the right tackle position for us and we believe he has the ability to perform at a high level."
The 6-foot-5, 300-pounder started 95 of a possible 96 games prior to his back problems, and was revered as one of the top lineman in the game. Originally selected seventh overall by New Orleans in the 1998 NFL Draft, Turley played five seasons for the Saints and helped guide them to their first-ever playoff victory in 2000.
He was acquired by St. Louis in 2003 for a second-round draft pick and was a main cog in a unit that ranked third in yards per game that season. He missed the following year with his back ailment, however, and was released in 2005 after failing a team physical.
Turley spoke of making his return as a tight end, but the Chiefs' current plans appear to have the San Diego State product at his natural position.
Kansas City also agreed to terms with free agent defensive tackle James Reed on a one-year contract.
In 2005, Reed started 15 of 16 games for the Jets, recording 58 tackles, two sacks and two fumble recoveries.
Originally a seventh-round draft pick of New York in 2001, the five-year veteran has played in 80 games (17 starts) while collecting 176 tackles and six sacks.
