Raleigh, NC (My Sportsbook) - The
New Jersey Devils will try to gain a measure of revenge tonight when they travel to Raleigh to battle the struggling Carolina Hurricanes, the team that ended their season a year ago.
Last season the Devils became the first victim of the Hurricanes' improbable run to the Stanley Cup finals in a six-game loss.
New Jersey, however, is off to its best start since the 1995-96 campaign when it won its first four games to kick off the season.
On Friday, the Devils needed overtime to run their record to a perfect 3-0 with a 3-2 win over the hapless Nashville Predators.
After the Preds had tied the game on a power-play tally with 2:26 left in regulation, Patrik Elias scored just 1:16 into overtime to lift New Jersey to victory. Elias had been called for an illegal stick late in the third period, which led to Nashville's tying goal.
Scott Gomez started the play on the winning goal with a rush from his own zone. He crossed the Nashville blue line along the right wing and left the puck for Elias, who skated through the circle and around defenseman Francis Bouillon. Bouillon tried to poke the puck off Elias' stick, but the puck instead floated over Dunham and into the net for the winning goal.
Colin White also scored and Sergei Brylin notched a goal and an assist for the Devils, while Martin Brodeur made 22 saves. Brylin's goal was the first power- play score of the season for the Devs, who had been 0-for-15 with the extra skater.
Carolina dropped its third straight game on Thursday to its Southeastern Division rival Washington Capitals, 2-1.
Ron Francis tallied the lone goal for Carolina, which fell to 1-3-0-1 on the season. Kevin Weekes turned aside 25 shots for the Hurricanes.
The Hurricanes had a couple of good scoring chances in the closing minutes. Erik Cole fanned on an open shot from the right circle with Washington goaltender Olaf Kolzig out of position. The netminder then got his stick on a deflected shot by Rod Brind'Amour in front with just over one minute remaining.
Jeff O'Neill assisted on Francis' score and has a helper in each of his last four games.
New Jersey, which has won two straight at RBC Center, is 10-5-2 in the last 17 meetings with the Hurricanes.
