Omaha, NE (My Sportsbook) - Josh Horton's single to right field drove in the go-ahead run in the 13th inning to boost North Carolina to a 7-5 victory over Cal State Fullerton at the College World Series.
The Tar Heels will take on Clemson Sunday at Rosenblatt Stadium.
Andy D'Alessio hit a three-run homer, highlighting an eight-run eighth inning as Clemson defeated Georgia Tech, 8-4, in the first matchup of Bracket 1 on Friday.
North Carolina took advantage of a crucial base-running mistake by Cory Vanderhook in the bottom of the 11th inning. Vanderhook walked and reached third base later in the inning, but was caught off guard when Tar Heels pitcher Matt Danford (7-1) threw the ball to third base in a pickoff try. Vanderhook was caught off base and was tagged out by catcher Tim Federowicz.
Mike Cavasinni, Reid Fronk and Horton singled to start the 13th inning against Lauren Gagnier (14-5). Federowicz singled up the middle later in the inning for the final margin.
Andrew Carignan threw an inning for his 14th save.
Jared Clark and Evan McArthur homered for the Titans, who face the Yellow Jackets in a Bracket 1 elimination game Sunday afternoon.
Fronk and Benji Johnson belted home runs for the Tar Heels, who finally put an end to a game that lasted nearly five hours.
Clemson's win came via the big inning. Trailing 4-3, D'Alessio crushed a 2-2 offering over the wall in right-center for a 6-4 lead. Marquez Smith hit a two-run double and Tyler Colvin was 2-for-5 with a run scored for the Tigers, who had 13 batters come to the plate against five different pitchers in the inning.
"It seems like we have been coming on strong late," D'Alessio said. "We were able to get to their bullpen and I was able to come up with a big it."
Ryan Hinson (4-0) threw two innings, giving up just one hit for Clemson, which recorded its third straight come-from-behind win.
Jeff Kindel hit a three-run homer and Ryan Turner (4-4) recorded the loss, yielding three runs on two hits and a walk, while not retiring a batter for the Yellow Jackets, who still have a chance in the double elimination tournament.
Starter Lee Hyde pitched well, surrendering two runs on three hits in seven- plus innings of work but couldn't get through the eighth frame. He also walked five and struck out six.
Clemson will next play Sunday against the winner of Friday's second matchup between Cal-State Fullerton-North Carolina.
There will be two games from Bracket 2 on Saturday. Georgia battles Rice in the afternoon contest, while Miami-Florida plays Oregon State in the evening matchup.
