St. Paul, MN (My Sportsbook) - The Minnesota Wild will try to stay undefeated through their first five games for the second year in a row when they welcome the defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings to the Xcel Energy Center Saturday.
The Wild, which began 3-0-3 a year ago, had their most impressive victory of the season on Thursday with a 3-1 home victory over the red hot Dallas Stars.
Marian Gaborik netted his first two scores of the season for Minnesota, which is 3-0 on its home ice thus far.
After Gaborik's shot from the slot deflected off Dallas netminder Marty Turco and just over the goal line to give the Wild a two-goal advantage, the Stars fought back and pulled within a goal.
However, Bill Muckalt tallied an empty-netter to secure the win.
Manny Fernandez stopped 33 shots against his former team, including a glove save on a Mike Modano shot that would have tied the game with just over a minute to play.
The Red Wings had their Stanley Cup celebration ruined at Joe Louis Arena Thursday when the Montreal Canadiens handed Detroit a 3-2 loss.
Brendan Shanahan and Pavel Datsyuk scored goals for the Red Wings, who raised their 10th Stanley Cup championship banner in ceremonies before the contest. Curtis Joseph, in his first home start, made 11 saves for Detroit, which outshot Montreal 32-14.
Shanahan is now one goal short of matching Jean Beliveau (507) for 27th on the all-time list.
Detroit kept good pressure in the Montreal end in the final minute and had one good chance, but Canadiens' netminder Jeff Hackett stuck out his right pad to turn away Tomas Holmstrom with just 25 seconds to play.
The Wings outshot the Canadiens 10-3 in the third period.
Brett Hull did not light the lamp and remained five goals shy of tying Phil Esposito's power-play goal record of 249.
Detroit is unbeaten (5-0-1) in the last six overall meetings and 2-0-1 in its last three visits to St. Paul.
