Ottawa, Ontario (My Sportsbook) - The
Ottawa Senators hope to regain sole possession of the National Hockey League penthouse tonight when they welcome the
Boston Bruins to Corel Centre.
With 107 points and a game in hand, the Sens are tied with the Dallas Stars for first in the league's overall standings.
Ottawa is also four points ahead of New Jersey atop the Eastern Conference, and the Devils hold a game in hand. A Sens win and regulation Devs loss to Toronto tonight would wrap up the No. 1 conference seed for the upcoming playoffs.
On Saturday the Senators posted a 3-1 victory in Montreal, as Jason Spezza had a goal and an assist to lead the effort. Brian Pothier and Bryan Smolinski also scored for the Senators, who improved to 9-3-1 in their last 13 overall. Patrick Lalime made 23 saves and won his franchise-record 37th game of the season.
The victory was the Sens' 49th of the campaign, which broke the team mark set in 2000-01.
Ottawa's Marian Hossa was held goal-less for the third straight game Saturday, and has managed a mere one score in his last six contests. Hossa remains one tally shy of matching Alexei Yashin's club record of 44 goals, set in 1998-99.
The Senators, 0-2-1 in their last three home tilts, will close out the season with road games in Washington (Thursday) and Toronto (Saturday).
Boston, meanwhile, clinched its second straight playoff berth with a 2-2 tie against Tampa Bay on Monday. Mike Knuble scored 4:27 into the third period to deadlock the score for the B's, who also received a goal from Nick Boynton. Steve Shields finished with 15 saves.
The Bruins, with 84 points, are seventh in the East -- four ahead of the eighth-place NY Islanders and four behind the Capitals, who sit sixth.
Captain Joe Thornton chipped in an assist Monday and now ranks third in the NHL with 97 points (35g, 62a) on the season. Vancouver's Markus Naslund leads with 103, while Colorado's Peter Forsberg is second with 102.
Boston is winless in its last three tries (0-1-2) and 1-3-1-1 in its last six on the road. The Bruins will close out the season with games in New Jersey on Thursday and Buffalo at home on Saturday.
Ottawa is 2-1-1 against Boston this season, and 8-3-1 in the last 12 meetings. The Bruins are 0-8-1 in their last nine trips to Corel Centre.
