Pittsburgh, PA (My Sportsbook) - The
Tampa Bay Lightning will try to improve on their franchise-best start when they travel to Pittsburgh to battle the Penguins at the Igloo on Saturday.
Tampa, which is three games over .500 for the first time since October 24, 1996, earned its third straight win with a convincing 8-5 victory over the winless Atlanta Thrashers on Friday.
Vincent Lecavalier collected two goals and one assist in the victory and has nine goals in 11 games dating back to last season. Finally starting to live up to his enormous potential, Lecavalier has three goals and four assists through his team's first three games.
Lecavalier could remain hot as he has tallied eight times in his career against Pittsburgh, the most goals he has against any other team in the league.
Ruslan Fedotenko and Martin St. Louis each added a goal and two assists for the Lightning, who are off to a 3-0 start for the first time in their 11-year history. Tim Taylor also scored twice for Tampa Bay, which won its first two home games of the year for the first time since its inaugural 1992-93 campaign.
Nikolai Khabibulin improved to 132-27-7 when his team scores three or more goals as he stopped 21 shots for Tampa Bay, which was 1-of-7 on the power play.
Fourteen of 18 Lightning skaters had a point, including five multi-point efforts.
Dave Andreychuk was held off the scoresheet, but his next power-play tally will move him two behind Phil Esposito's National Hockey League record for power-play markers (249). Andreychuk, who now needs seven goals to tie Jari Kurri (601) for 13th on the all-time list, will be playing in his 1,447th game to pass Tim Horton for 10th on the games played list.
Pittsburgh also enters the game on a hot-streak, as it has won its last three games after dropping its season-opener.
Following wins against the Rangers and Maple Leafs, the Penguins improved to 3-1-0 with a 3-2 victory over Atlanta on Wednesday.
Alexei Kovalev and Randy Robitaille each had a goal and an assist for Pittsburgh, which also got three assists from Mario Lemieux.
Aleksey Morozov also scored before getting hurt for Pittsburgh. Johan Hedberg stopped 32 shots for the Penguins, who withstood two third-period goals by the Thrashers to hold on.
Hedberg will be in net again tonight due to a slight knee problem to Jean- Sebastien Aubin.
The current string by the Penguins is the team's longest since January 17-26 of last season, when Pittsburgh won six in a row
The Penguins have won three of the last five meetings and are 5-4-1 in the last 10 against the Lightning.
Tampa Bay, which has dropped five straight in Pittsburgh, is 1-9-1 in the last 11 at the Igloo.
