(My Sportsbook) - The
Ottawa Senators continued to chip away at that magic number Tuesday night.
Martin Havlat scored early in the second period and the Senators held on for a 3-2 win over the Boston Bruins at the Corel Centre. Marian Hossa scored twice, including his club-record 45th marker, and Radek Bonk added three assists for Ottawa, which tops the NHL's overall standings with 109 points.
The Sens lead the Dallas Stars by two points in the race for the Presidents' Trophy, and are three ahead of the Detroit Red Wings. Both Ottawa and Dallas have two games remaining, while Detroit has three to play.
Patrick Lalime turned aside 17 of the 19 shots he faced for Tuesday's victory. The Senators, five points ahead of New Jersey atop the Eastern Conference, have won two in a row and are 10-3-1 in their last 14 games.
Martin Lapointe's goal 2:34 into the first period gave Boston a 1-0 lead. Lapointe skated around the back of the net with a defender in his face and shoveled the puck with his backhand through Lalime's legs for his eighth goal.
Ottawa later tied the game midway through the first when Hossa cashed in a power play. Havlat slipped the puck through the slot to Hossa, who backhanded the puck under a sliding Tim Thomas at 9:55.
Just 36 seconds later, Murray netted his 42nd goal of the season to put the Bruins back in front. Joe Thornton and Murray skated into the Ottawa zone on a 2-on-1. Thornton then fed a cross-ice pass to Murray, who wristed the puck high into the net at the 10:31 mark.
With 1:29 remaining in the first, Hossa recorded his second goal of the night to even the score. Vaclav Varada sent a nice pass through his legs to Hossa in the slot where the young star one-timed the puck inside the left post.
Havlat's power-play goal 3:28 into the second period gave the Senators a 3-2 lead. Bonk threaded a pass in front to Havlat, who deflected the puck just inside the left post for his 24th goal.
