West Allis, WI (My Sportsbook) - After failing to win in his first 59 truck races, Johnny Benson won for the second straight race, capturing Friday night's Toyota Tundra Milwaukee 200 at the historic Milwaukee Mile. The No.23 Toyota driver crossed the finish line well ahead of runner-up Mike Bliss.
The victory was the second of Benson's 61-race truck career.
"Man, I can't say enough about these guys," said Benson. "We knew we've been close and hopefully we would have the opportunity to win races this year, but I didn't think we would win this many this quick."
Ron Hornaday Jr. led the field to the opening green flag and refused to give up the lead. Through 25 laps he keep the lead while Johnny Sauter, Jack Sprague and last week's MIS winner Benson held down the three spots behind him.
Meanwhile, the series points leader, Todd Bodine, started seventh and immediately fell out of the top-10 with a truck that was "way too tight."
But slowly Bodine settled in and regained his early lost positions.
Following a caution flag and pit stops on lap 39, Hornaday Jr. surrendered the lead to Rick Crawford who came in seventh. His lightning fast pit stop was due to not changing any tires. Also improving on pit lane was Bodine (up to sixth) and David Reutimann (up to 10th).
Crawford's lead didn't last long as both Hornaday Jr. and Benson quickly found a way past him. And so did the rest of the top-10 as the "no-tire" strategy seemed to backfire.
Benson made a rare outside move around Hornaday Jr. for the lead on lap 56.
Again, Hornaday didn't let the leader stay there for long. While the lead group was lapping slower trucks, Hornaday Jr., caught Benson and passed him for the lead. Benson fell all the way to third as Sprague followed Hornaday Jr. around the outside for second place.
Reutimann stayed out during the next caution to lead a lap and the second through fourth trucks changed just two tires. Hornaday Jr. took four tires and came out sixth.
Bliss used his newer tires (at least the right-side tires were newer) to his advantage and passed Reutimann for the lead on lap 90. Sprague also took a turn with the top spot.
Chris Wimmer came to a stop on the track with 86 laps remaining bringing out the caution and bringing all the leaders, except David Starr, down pit road for a final pit stop and last set of new tires.
They came off pit road with Starr holding the lead closely followed by Bodine (no tires changed), Aric Almirola and Hornaday Jr.
Bodine took just one lap to take the lead, ducking underneath Starr for the top spot.
But Hornaday Jr. was the fastest truck on the track and his record pole was the proof. He showed it again with 74 laps to go as he charged underneath Bodine for the lead.
Hornaday Jr. moved out to a big lead as Benson pulled into second place. It was more than one second as the field passed the 140-lap mark.
But Benson wasn't giving up and his confidence was sky-high after last week's victory. He closed in on Hornaday Jr. as the two worked their way through lapped traffic and was just three lengths back with 45 laps to go.
Five laps later, Benson slid under Hornaday Jr. in turn three for the lead.
Bodine spun out in turn two of lap 166 and the points leader was in danger of losing a big chunk of that lead. He gathered his truck and continued on, but in 26th place.
The green flag dropped with 26 laps remaining.
Hornaday, Jr., known as the "King of Restarts," made a quick move to the bottom of the track, but Benson blocked him and maintained the lead as the drivers reached the 180-lap mark. The margin was about half-a-second over Hornaday Jr. and almost four seconds on third-place Sprague.
Benson continued to expand the margin to more than two seconds with 15 laps to go and over three seconds with a dozen laps remaining.
Only a caution flag over the last 10 laps could get Bliss, who had passed Hornaday Jr., back in the chase for the win, but none was forthcoming and Benson cruised to a second consecutive victory.
Hornaday Jr., Sprague and Reutimann completed the top-five.
Bodine still owns a 126-point lead in the standings over Reutimann (1,758 - 1,632). Benson jumped up one spot to third place with 1,628 points.
The next race in the series is set for Saturday, July 1st at the Kansas Speedway.
