New York, NY (My Sportsbook) - New York Yankees second baseman Alfonso Soriano has been honored as the American League Player of the Week for the opening week of the 2003 season. Soriano batted.452 (14-for-31) with major league-leading totals of 14 hits and 28 total bases to help lift the Yankees to a 5-1 start. He had three homers, including a grand slam on opening day in a win over Toronto. Soriano had a slugging percentage of .903 for the week, scored eight times and drove in 10 runs. He also had multiple hits in all six games. This marks the second time that Soriano has received Player of the Week honors in his career. Other candidates for the award were Anaheim's Garret Anderson, Hank Blalock of Texas, Oakland's Erubiel Durazo, Boston's Shea Hillenbrand and Kansas City's Brent Mayne and Runelvys Hernandez, Minnesota's Kyle Lohse, as well as Yankee hurlers Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte.
