Berlin, Germany (My Sportsbook) - After an impressive 2-0 win over Sweden in the Round of 16, host Germany meets rival Argentina Friday in the quarterfinals at Berlin's Olympiastadion.
Lukas Podolski scored two goals against the Swiss to power Germany into the next round. The FC Cologne striker notched his first in just the fourth minute, and followed the performance by scoring his second goal eight minutes later. Overall, the German offense found 25 shots, with 10 shots on goal, compared to Sweden's five goal attempts.
Argentina heads into the quarterfinals after defeating Mexico in Leipzig. Maxi Rodriguez drilled a beautiful 98th minute goal in the first half of extra time to give Jose Pekerman's squad the 2-1 win over Mexico and life beyond the group stages.
Despite being the first on the board in the sixth minute, Mexico conceded the equalizer four minutes later to Hernan Crespo. After that, both teams remained locked with a goal each for nearly 90 minutes until Rodriguez broke the score in extra time.
Friday's match marks the nations' fifth meeting at a FIFA World Cup. The two teams also met in the Finals of Mexico 86, where the South Americans slid past Germany, 3-2. Four years later, Germany got revenge as it shut out the Albiceleste, 1-0, at Italia 90.
Germany's Michael Ballack and Miroslav Klose have been confirmed as fit to play in the quarterfinals by assistant coach Joachim Loew. Ballack missed Tuesday's training session due to a swollen ankle, while Klose was sidelined with tendonitis.
Argentina's Luis Gonzalez has recovered from a groin injury, while Nicolas Burdisso is questionable with a knee injury.
"We're not particularly nervous about facing Argentina, even though they're a strong side and one of the favorites for the title. Now that they have had the misfortune to come up against us, we hope we can send them home," Klose told FIFA's website.
