(My Sportsbook) - The
Edmonton Oilers dropped their third straight game Saturday and with upcoming tilts against Colorado and St. Louis, things don't seem to be getting better anytime in the near future.
The latest team to turn Edmonton back were the road-weary Boston Bruins, who played the fifth leg of a season-opening six game road trip. Edmonton fell behind for the fourth time in their last five games and lost 4-3.
"You can't fall behind and expect to win," said Mike Comrie, who paced the Oilers a year ago with 33 goals. "You're always chasing and making plays when you probably shouldn't be because you're trying to get goals back."
Anson Carter, Mike York and Steve Staios all notched goals for Edmonton (1-3-1), which has been outscored 11-6 in its three losses.
"It's a combination of poor play and Murphy's Law, and normally, poor play leads to Murphy's Law," Oilers coach Craig MacTavish said. "We've got to get better in a hurry. We're certainly capable of it. We're not talking about American League players. We're talking about world-class players who are out of sync right now."
Most disturbing is the fact that the team has struggled on the defensive side, making costly mistakes at inopportune times. Five of the six blueliners were with the team last season and that unit finished second overall in goals against.
"You have to dig in and make the right plays -- simplify the game and eventually things come around," Oilers general manager Kevin Lowe told the Edmonton Journal. "We just don't want our defensemen to go back there mindlessly and throw it around the boards. We have plays so when the other team dumps it in, you maintain puck possession."
WHO'S NEXT
Edmonton will try and right its ship in Colorado on Tuesday before returning home to face the Blues, Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, Dallas Stars and Buffalo Sabres.
