Dortmund, Germany (My Sportsbook) - Just when it looked as if a penalty kick shootout was on the way, Fabio Grosso scored late in the second half of extra time to help Italy shock Germany, 2-0, on Tuesday.
After numerous attempts and close calls, Grosso found the net first in the 119th minute, and substitute Alessandro Del Piero followed with a goal minutes later to give Italy a chance for World Cup glory.
The Italians will face the winner of Wednesday's other semifinal match between France and Portugal in Sunday's final.
Germany has never beaten Italy in a World Cup match. The Germans will face the loser of the other semifinal in the consolation game on Saturday.
Italy gave German goalkeeper Jens Lehmann an early test in just the fourth minute, when Francesco Totti drilled a free kick to the top of the net, forcing the goalkeeper to make the save.
Italy pressured again in the 10th minute, when Luca Toni sent a cross from the left side into the German penalty box that was kicked out by Philipp Lahm to put a stop to the attack.
Germany found its best chance of the half in the 34th minute, when Miroslav Klose sent a solid pass from the left side to Bernd Schneider, who drilled a shot from outside of the corner of the box that flew just over the crossbar and out of bounds.
Throughout much of the first half, Italy held a slight lead in ball control, though both clubs managed to find opportunities on the net.
By the end of the first half, there were 18 fouls, with only one caution issued in the 40th minute to Borowski. Borowski was called for a slide tackle from behind on Totti.
Italy dominated on shots on goal, taking three on the German net. The Italian defense continued its strength and did not allow the Germans a single shot on goal through the first 45 minutes.
Entering the second half, neither coach opted to make any changes to the starting lineups.
Still without even a shot on goal, Germany found a quick attack in the 50th minute, but Klose's smothered shot was saved when Gianluigi Buffon ran out to block the shot, quickly putting an end to the opportunity.
Germany was given a great chance in the 82nd minute on a free kick just outside of the center of the Italian penalty box. Michael Ballack took the free kick, but drilled it over the net, putting another disappointing finish to a scoring opportunity for the host country.
Lehmann kept Germany in the match in the 85th minute, when he made a diving save to block Simone Perrotta's chip shot.
With three minutes of stoppage time, neither team could find the goal to break the scoreless draw.
In the first half of extra time, Alberto Gilardino nearly found the first goal of the match, when his shot from the end line on the right side deflected off the near post. Gianluca Zambrotta followed the opportunity with a shot that hit the crossbar a minute later.
Italy finally found the back of the net in the 119th minute of extra time, when Grosso drilled a shot from the right side to give the Italians the 1-0 lead.
Italy struck again in the 121st, when Del Piero sent a shot from inside the left side of the penalty box past a diving Lehmann and in to seal the 2-0 victory and a spot in the tournament's final match.
