Detroit, MI (My Sportsbook) - The
Calgary Flames will try to run their unbeaten string to four games tonight when they travel to Joe Louis Arena to battle the defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings.
After dropping its first two games of the year, Calgary is unbeaten in its last three, including a 5-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday.
Chris Drury scored twice and Jarome Iginla chipped in a goal for the Flames, who also got 33 saves from netminder Roman Turek. Bob Boughner scored and Martin Gelinas added his team-leading third goal of the season in the victory.
Iginla, who has 29 career points versus the Red WIngs, and Drury are both riding four-game point-scoring streaks.
Craig Conroy added two assists for Calgary, which capitalized on one of its two power-play chances.
After Chicago cut the deficit to one, the Flames scored a pair in the final 20 minutes to secure the win. Calgary regained its two-goal advantage on Gelinas' goal in the third. Gelinas poked in a rebound after Thibault made a save against Iginla, but failed to control the rebound.
Drury added the game's final goal with 7:55 left to play for a 5-2 lead. Drury received a backhand pass from Marc Savard and nailed a slap shot from the circle for his second score of the game.
The 26-year-old Drury leads the Flames with eight points (2g, 6a).
Blake Sloan will be playing in his 200th career game tonight if he skates.
Detroit has alternated wins and losses to start the season and is off to a 3-2-0 start. After dropping their season-opener on Thursday, the night which they raised the championship banner to the rafters of Joe Louis Arena, the Red Wings responded with a win over the Minnesota Wild on Saturday.
Darren McCarty scored twice, including the go-ahead tally early in the second period, as the Red Wings ended Minnesota's unbeaten run with a 5-3 win over the Wild. Sergei Fedorov and Kris Draper each had two assists for Detroit, which also received goals from Nicklas Lidstrom, rookie Henrik Zetterberg and Brett Hull.
After Minnesota tied the game at 3-3 early in the second, McCarty scored at the 3:32 juncture to put Detroit in front 4-3. Draper passed the puck from the right circle and McCarty was stationed in front of the net and batted the puck out of the air, sending it past Dwayne Roloson.
Zetterberg scored with 24.2 seconds left in the third to seal the win.
Curtis Joseph made 19 saves for Detroit. Joseph, who was ever so briefly the property of the Flames this summer, has a stellar 20-7-3 career mark against Calgary.
Brendan Shanahan did not light the lamp and remains one goal short of matching Jean Beliveau (507) for 27th on the all-time list. Hull's tally came shorthanded and the future Hall of Famer is still five goals shy of tying Phil Esposito's power-play goal record of 249.
Calgary took three of four from the Red Wings last season and has won five of seven from Detroit. However, the Flames have lost two of their last three in Detroit and are 3-6-2 in the last 11 in the Motor City.
