San Jose, CA (My Sportsbook) - The
Vancouver Canucks will hope to end a four-game winless string tonight when they face off with the San Jose Sharks at the Compaq Center.
Vancouver, after winning its first two games, has gone 0-1-2 in its last three, including a 2-2 deadlock with the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday.
Markus Naslund scored the game-tying goal midway through the third period for the Canucks, who managed just 19 shots on goal.
Just under five minutes after LA went ahead 2-1, Vancouver evened the score when Naslund fired a low wrister past Kings' netminder Felix Potvin from the left circle. Brendan Morrison set up the goal by fighting through two Kings in the high slot to poke a backhand pass to Naslund.
Peter Skudra made 14 saves and Todd Warriner scored the other goal for Vancouver, which will likely have Dan Cloutier back between the pipes Monday after a game's rest.
The Canucks, who will be wrapping up a three-game road trip, were 0-for-5 on the power play and have not cashed in their last nine chances with the extra skater.
San Jose, which will embark on a six-game road trip following the game, has dropped three of four to start the season and most recently fell 3-1 to the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday.
Mike Ricci had the lone goal for San Jose, which has dropped two of three at home this year.
Vesa Toskala performed well in his second career start, as the Sharks continue to play without star goaltender Evgeni Nabokov, who remains unsigned. Toskala made 36 saves, and held the high-powered Avs scoreless for more than two periods.
San Jose took the 1-0 lead on a power-play goal from Ricci with 8:07 left in the first period. Mike Rathje took a shot from the near slot which Roy saved, but the puck trickled out to Vincent Damphousse, who fed a perfect pass to Ricci for the backhander that got past Colorado goaltender Patrick Roy.
After winning all four meetings last season by a combined 19-8 margin, the Canucks defeated San Jose earlier this season, 5-3.
Trent Klatt had two goals and Brent Sopel, Todd Warriner and Matt Cooke scored in that contest for Vancouver, which has dropped two straight and is 3-5-3 in its last 11 at the Shark Tank.
Marco Sturm scored a pair of third-period goals and added an assist in the early-season loss for the Sharks, who are 9-5-5 versus Vancouver in the last 19 meetings.
