New York, NY (My Sportsbook) - Pittsburgh Penguins center Mario Lemieux was named NHL Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday, October 20. Lemieux led all NHL scorers with eight points (two goals, six assists) in three games during the week. He had four points (two goals, two assists) in the Penguins' 5-4 victory at Toronto on October 14 and followed that performance with three assists in a 3-2 home victory over Atlanta on October 16. Three days later, he notched an assist in a 3-3 tie against Tampa Bay. This marks the 24th time Lemieux has won or shared NHL Player of the Week honors, second to Wayne Gretzky (44) on the all-time list since the inception of the award in the 1980-81 season. Minnesota Wild goaltender Manny Fernandez, Philadelphia Flyers left wing John LeClair and Boston Bruins center Joe Thornton were also considered for the award.
