(My Sportsbook) - The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim snapped a four-game winless streak when they topped the
Colorado Avalanche, 3-2, in overtime on Sunday in the first matchup between two Swiss-born goaltenders in an NHL game.
"Every win is a big win for us, we haven't gotten too many," rookie coach Mike Babcock said of the Ducks (2-3-1).
Andy McDonald scored his second goal of the season on a rebound as overtime was winding down to nail down the victory. Mike Leclerc took a shot from the right boards and Ruslan Salei deflected it on goal. David Aebischer made the save, but could not control the rebound and McDonald fired it home from the low slot.
"The puck was rolling a bit and I just wanted to get a shot on net," said McDonald, who has two goals and four assists to lead the Ducks in scoring.
Rookie Stanislav Chistov and Petr Sykora also scored for Anaheim, which ended an 0-7-3 skid against the Avalanche and beat Colorado for the first time since December 22, 1998.
A sidebar to the Ducks' much-needed win was the matchup between goaltenders Martin Gerber of the Mighty Ducks and Aebischer of the Colorado Avalanche.
"I think it's going to be in some [Swiss] papers, something that's never happened before," Gerber told the Orange County Register.
Gerber, an eighth-round entry-draft selection in 2001 who signed with the Ducks in July, made 22 saves in his first NHL start. Gerber and Aebischer shared goaltending duties for Switzerland in this year's Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, and have been summer workout partners while also attending a camp run by Ducks goaltending consultant Francois Allaire the past four years in Verbier, Switzerland.
"To play my first game against someone I know pretty well was pretty exciting," Gerber said.
Gerber had made just one other appearance this season, when he stopped all five shots he faced in relief of Jean-Sebastien Giguere during a 4-2 loss October 11 at Dallas.
It was also just the second time that two Swiss players had opposed each other in the NHL game. The last occurrence was on October 26, 2000, when Aebischer shut out the Chicago Blackhawks and Reto Van Arx.
WHAT'S AHEAD
The Ducks will try continue their winning ways Thursday when they open a five- game road trip in Vancouver. The stretch away from the Pond will also include visits to Edmonton, Toronto, Montreal and Boston.
