Philadelphia, PA (My Sportsbook) - Sami Kapanen scored two power-play goals to lead the
Philadelphia Flyers to a 4-1 victory over the
Toronto Maple Leafs in Game 5 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series at the First Union Center.
Simon Gagne and Dmitry Yushkevich also scored for Philadelphia, which has a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series. The Flyers, who have won the last two games, can wrap it up with a victory in Game 6 on Monday night in Toronto. Game 7, if necessary, would return to Philadelphia on Tuesday.
"I think that the reason we got on the power play is because we played well five-on-five. They took some penalties because of our positioning. Both teams' power plays were really dangerous today", said Flyers coach Ken Hitchcock.
Roman Cechmanek turned aside 22 shots in the victory, while Tony Amonte contributed a pair of assists.
Aki Berg scored the lone goal for Toronto and Ed Belfour finished with 25 saves. Belfour was coming off a 72-save performance in Philadelphia's 3-2, triple-overtime victory in Game 4 on Wednesday.
"We got the start we wanted to, and dictated the tempo early in the game. We're a team all year that's been playing well at parts of the game, but we have a tough time putting 60 good minutes together and in the playoffs you need to do that", Leafs team captain Mats Sundin said.
Alexander Mogilny was back in the lineup for the Leafs after missing Game 4 with concussion symptoms.
Just 2:34 into the opening period, Toronto flew through the neutral zone on a 3-on-2 rush and scored for a 1-0 lead. Darcy Tucker skated across the blue line and passed to Travis Green. Green then slid the puck to Berg, who blasted a slap shot past Cechmanek for his first career post-season tally.
The Flyers tied the contest at the 14:30 mark. With Tucker in the penalty box, defenseman Kim Johnsson corralled the puck at the left point and fired a wrister toward the net. Kapanen deflected the puck in mid-air and it squirted through Jeremy Roenick's legs before bouncing past an unsuspecting Belfour.
"I'm pretty happy. Its been a tough four months for me personally. My offensive drop-off started last year in the finals and it carried throughout this year", said Kapanen. "My numbers haven't been the same, so I'll take any kind of goals right now. They weren't perfect, but the next game is the biggest game of the year."
Yushkevich put Philadelphia ahead just under two minutes later. He took a feed from Roenick in the high slot and put home his first goal of the post-season at 16:25.
Toronto came within inches of tying the game while shorthanded in the middle of the second period. Johnsson's pass was broken up at the point by Mats Sundin, who took the puck down the right-wing side. He threaded a nice cross- ice pass to Mogilny, who hit the post.
Gagne put the Flyers ahead by two at 14:35 of the middle stanza. He took a pass from Justin Williams but lost the puck while trying to give it to Keith Primeau. A scramble in front ensued and Gagne eventually poked the disc home.
"It wasn't a killer goal, but it gave us more space to play the game we want defensively," said Gagne. It was nice to get the two-goal lead there and take it into the third period."
Kapanen scored his second power-play goal of the game at 8:41 of the third after Mogilny was hit with a double-minor for high-sticking. Eric Weinrich's shot from the point was stopped, but Kapanen picked up the rebound and deflected the puck home off Belfour.
"We were playing good at spurts of the game, and there were spurts of the game where we didn't play well, and it's costing us", said Sundin.
"Philadelphia has been checking well and playing a lot of the game in our end, which puts the odds in their favor to win the hockey game. Its two hockey games and we have to go home and win one on home ice and then come back here to see what happens after that."
