Hockenheim, Germany (My Sportsbook) - Michael Schumacher captured Sunday's Grosser Mobil 1 German Grand Prix in front of a roaring stadium full of his countrymen. The seven-time World Champion crossed the finish line 0.720 seconds ahead of his Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa.
The win was Schumacher's third in a row, fifth of the 2006 season and 89th of his Formula One career.
McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen brought the field to the green flag for 67 laps of racing on the renovated 2.842-mile Hockenheimring. A couple of drivers would fail to complete the first lap cleanly as Coulthard is knocked off the track, Jacques Villeneuve loses his front nose wing and Nico Rosberg slams the wall.
Raikkonen got the best start of all the drivers and quickly built a lead of more than one second over Schumacher and Massa. The margin was 3.1 seconds after eight laps and it appeared that the Ferrari could not keep up with the McLaren.
Meanwhile, series points leader Fernando Alonso was trailing his Renault teammate Giancarlo Fisichella in sixth place and looking very ordinary.
Raikkonen came in on lap 11, the first of the leaders, and in front of his home fans Schumacher took control of the race.
Schumacher and Massa were one-two and owned a 10-second lead over Jenson Button, who was in third place after 15 laps.
Alonso was losing ground to all the leaders, including teammate Fisichella, and Mark Webber was right on his rear bumper.
The two Ferraris were dominating the race, fully 20 seconds ahead of the field after 25 laps and with Alonso struggling it appeared that the championship was now leaning towards Schumacher. He entered the race down 17 points and seemed to be on the verge of cutting the margin to single digits.
At the mid-point, Schumacher and Massa were half-a-minute ahead of Button who was having his best drive in a long time. Fisichella was fourth and Alonso was stuck behind Webber in sixth place.
Schumacher and Massa completed their exhibition without challenge.
The race for third between Button, Webber and Raikkonen was the only interesting competition down the stretch. Button had a little problem leaving his pits on his final stop and found himself behind the other two men.
Webber made his final stop, but it wasn't quick enough to get him in front of Button who was clearly the third-fastest car on the track. Raikkonen only held a nine-second lead on Button with a final stop to make so Button seemed safe for the final podium position.
Raikkonen's stop was a lightning 6.6 seconds and he held off Webber for fourth place when he re-entered the track. He was just 2.2 seconds behind Button and had a serious shot at the final podium seat.
The Finn was flying and after two corners of side-by-side racing he made the pass on Button with nine laps to go.
Webber was suddenly slowing and Alonso grabbed fifth place and a additional championship point with less than 10 laps to go.
Alonso was trying hard to gain on Button but slid off the track with six laps to go. He gathered himself back up and saved his position as Fisichella held his position behind the defending series champion.
Jarno Trulli and Christian Klien completed the points-scoring positions.
Schumacher cut six points into Alonso's lead and trails the Spaniard by 11 points (100-89) entering next Sunday's race in Hungary.
