New Orleans, LA (My Sportsbook) - Baron Davis scored 28 points and handed out eight assists to lead the
New Orleans Hornets to a 99-85 win over the
Philadelphia 76ers in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series. The Hornets trail the best-of-seven series, 2-1, with Game 4 scheduled for Monday at the New Orleans Arena.
Davis, who was playing with an ailing left knee, sank four three-pointers and grabbed four rebounds in 40 minutes for New Orleans, which made 40.2 percent of its shots.
"Everybody had to come in and give 110 percent tonight to win, and that's what we did," Davis said. "The crowd pushed us. Everybody was focused."
Jamaal Magloire chipped in 18 points and nine rebounds, while teammate P.J. Brown had 17 points and 12 boards in the win. Hornets forward Jamal Mashburn did not play because of an injured middle finger on his right hand.
Philadelphia was led by Allen Iverson's 28 points and seven assists. Kenny Thomas, Keith Van Horn and Derrick Coleman each had 12 points in the loss for the Sixers, who shot 42.9 percent from the floor.
"They [Hornets] just out-hustled us tonight," Iverson said. "They just wanted it more. They showed a lot of heart and character, but we [76ers] got Monday to get down," Iverson said after his press conference.
Leading 73-71 early in the fourth quarter, the Hornets went on a 13-0 burst to open an 86-71 advantage with less than seven minutes remaining. Davis had five points in the run and Stacey Augmon capped it with a layup.
Jerome Moiso then gave the Hornets a commanding 92-75 lead on a dunk with less than five minutes to play in the game. The Sixers never made it interesting the rest of the way and suffered the 14-point defeat.
"Everybody was confident and in a good groove," Moiso noted. "I got on the weak side and nobody paid attention to me a few times [in the fourth quarter]. I got in a good groove after the two tips. It just came from that."
Moiso had 10 points off the bench for New Orleans, which won the battle on the boards by a 51-33 margin, including a franchise-best 21 on the offensive side.
Philadelphia took a 12-8 lead on Coleman's basket, but the Hornets countered with a 9-2 run to grab a 17-14 lead. David Wesley's three capped the burst. The 76ers would then score seven straight for a 21-17 edge. Iverson's three ended the run with less than five minutes left. However, 10 straight points by New Orleans made it 27-21 but Philadelphia scored six in a row to tie it after one.
Van Horn's three-pointer four minutes into the second quarter tied the game at 34-34. Philadelphia would later grab a 44-38 advantage on Iverson's wide-open layup. The Hornets then scored nine of the next 11 points for a slim 47-46 lead at halftime.
Greg Buckner's first basket of the playoffs and Iverson's layup would give the 76ers a 60-54 lead with seven minutes remaining in the third quarter. New Orleans came right back and reeled off eight straight points for a 62-60 lead. Magloire's two foul shots capped the spurt with 3:36 to play.
Aaron McKie and Kenny Anderson exchanged three-point plays with the Hornets holding a 65-63 lead. George Lynch buried a three and Coleman added a basket, but the Hornets led by a 68-65 score after 36 minutes of play.
"This team is amazing," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "They [Hornets] always come through. We were awfully close in Philly. Baron Davis carried us tonight."
