Lots of competition for jobs among Bucs receivers

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) -Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden summoned receiver Michael Clayton to his office during the offseason and handed the third-year pro a piece of paper to read and sign.

The typewritten personal agreement that Clayton gladly put his name on spelled out what kind of player the Bucs expect him to be this season and gave him extra motivation to put a disappointing, injury-filled 2005 behind him.

``He has to reestablish himself as the guy we brought in here,'' Gruden recalled after the team convened for training camp last week. ``He knows that, the fans know that, and the expectations are for that to happen.''

Clayton is among a talented group of players competing for jobs in what - at least on paper - could wind up being the deepest receiving corps the Bucs have ever had. He and Joey Galloway are the projected starters, with former Pro Bowl wideout David Boston among the players vying for backup roles.

After catching 80 passes for 1,193 yards and seven touchdowns as a rookie two years ago, injuries limited Clayton's production in 2005, when he had 32 receptions for 372 yards and failed to get into the end zone.

The 23-year-old's disappearance from the offense left the Bucs wondering what might have been.

Galloway re-established himself as one of the league's most explosive receivers with 83 catches for 1,287 yards and 10 TDs, however quarterback Chris Simms would have benefitted from having another go-to guy.

If the first week of practice is any indication, Simms won't have that problem this season.

Clayton appears to have fully recovered from knee and shoulder surgery, as well as a turf toe injury that kept him out of Tampa Bay's first-round playoff loss to Washington last January.

And Boston, who missed most of the past two seasons with the Miami Dolphins because of knee injuries, has been impressive, too.

Throw in sure-handed veteran Ike Hilliard, young prospect Edell Shepherd and rookie Maurice Stovall, the club's third-round draft pick, and Gruden could have some tough choices to make after the preseason.

``I would hate to be the coaches and have to make that decision,'' Simms said. ``We are deep at that position.''

For now, though, the young Bucs quarterback is enjoying working with a healthy Clayton again. Simms also is excited about how Boston might be able to help the offense if the 6-foot-2, 228-pound receiver makes the team.

Boston was one of the league's top receivers when he had 98 receptions for 1,598 yards and seven TDs with Arizona in 2001, but injuries and suspensions derailed a career that also included a stop in San Diego.

The eight-year pro impressed Gruden during offseason workouts in Tampa and continues to show flashes of the player he once was, including a nice one-handed catch in practice Friday.

``He's obviously got a lot of talent. It's undisputed if you've watched him play in the past,'' Gruden said.

``He's getting himself healthy again. That's the number one agenda. Let's get you healthy, and secondly, let's teach you our offense. He's putting them both together right now and making big plays for us. But we've got a long way to go to truly get him back to where he was and where he can go.''

Boston is appreciative of the opportunity to show he can still play.

``I love to compete, and the last couple of years I wasn't able to do that because I was hurt. My mind wanted to do it, but my body wouldn't let me,'' Boston said.

``This is an exciting offense. ... There's a lot of talent and a lot of competition out there, so I'm excited to figure out my role on this team and try to maximize it.''
