(My Sportsbook) - One day after dropping a marathon 20-inning affair to the
St. Louis Cardinals, the
Florida Marlins kick off a seven-game road trip this evening with a four-game set in Arizona against the Diamondbacks at Bank One Ballpark.
The Marlins used three home runs in a five-run bottom of the ninth to even their contest with St. Louis, but finally succumbed to the Cardinals in the 20th inning, 7-6, on Fernando Vina's RBI single. The game was the longest in the majors since a 22-inning contest between Minnesota and Cleveland on August 31, 1993.
Ramon Castro, Luis Castillo and Mike Lowell all homered in the big ninth for the Marlins, who dropped two of three to St. Louis, but fell for just the second time in their last six games.
Castillo, who entered the game in the seventh inning, extended his hitting streak to 10 games
Carl Pavano (2-3), the eighth Florida hurler, was dealt the loss after surrendering the winning run in two innings of work. Pavano was scheduled to start Monday's game against Arizona, but Justin Wayne will now get the call for the Marlins, as he'll be added to the team's 25-man roster on Monday from Triple-A Albuquerque. The 24-year-old righthander made five starts with Florida last season and was 2-3 with a 5.32 ERA. This will be the first-ever appearance against the Diamondbacks for the Honolulu, Hawaii native.
Michael Tejera, Wednesday's scheduled starter, will likely provide long relief help Monday if needed.
Florida is now 13-13 on the season, 2 1/2 games back of Philadelphia, Montreal, and Atlanta in baseball's most competitive division, the NL East.
