Buffalo, NY (My Sportsbook) - The
Philadelphia Flyers try to remain one of two unbeaten teams in the National Hockey League tonight when they visit the
Buffalo Sabres at HSBC Arena. Philly shares the spotlight with Tampa Bay amongst the ranks of the undefeated.
Philadelphia (3-0-2) is coming off Saturday's 3-1 victory over the Washington Capitals at the First Union Center. After they fell behind 1-0 in the first, John LeClair and Simon Gagne scored second period goals to put the Flyers ahead, and Donald Brashear added an insurance tally very early in the third.
LeClair, who brought some injury issues into this season, continued his torrid start with his league-leading seventh tally of the campaign. The three-time 50-goal scorer has two assists as well thus far, and has contributed at least a point in every game.
Between the pipes, Robert Esche was impressive in his first start as a Flyer, stopping 23-of-24 shots. Esche gave Roman Cechmanek the afternoon off, and Cechmanek, as scheduled, is expected to be back in net this evening. The Czech, who struggled during the preseason, is 2-0-2 with a 2.64 goals- against average and .897 save-percentage.
Buffalo, meanwhile, is winless in three straight contests (0-2-1) since beginning the season with convincing victories over the Islanders and Canadiens. After scoring a combined 11 goals in those two wins, the Sabres have managed just six in the last three.
On Saturday, Lindy Ruff's club dropped a 3-2 decision to Phoenix in the second installment of a four-game homestand. Chris Gratton and Taylor Pyatt tallied for the Sabres, but that was hardly enough as the Coyotes put two on the board in the first 11:48 of the third to provide the difference.
Gratton's goal and assist gives him a team-high seven points on the young season, while Pyatt's marker was his third, which ties him with Miroslav Satan and Tim Connolly for the club lead.
Mika Noronen turned aside 25 shots in place of regular starter Martin Biron, who will likely be in net tonight. Biron holds a 4-2-1 record and 1.55 goals- against average in seven career games against the Flyers.
Buffalo wraps up its current home set on Friday against New Jersey, then opens a six-game road trek the next night in Pittsburgh.
Ruff's crew swept four games from the Flyers last season -- after knocking them out of the playoffs the previous spring -- and outscored them 11-4 in the four tilts. Philadelphia is 3-5-1 in its last nine regular season trips to HSBC Arena.
