Denver, CO (My Sportsbook) - Future Hall of Famer Patrick Roy will match Terry Sawchuk's NHL record for a goaltender by playing in his 971st game tonight when the
Colorado Avalanche host the
Edmonton Oilers at the Pepsi Center.
Roy, who already owns the NHL record for most wins (518), is scheduled to start tonight after a day off on Sunday. Sawchuk, who played 21 seasons with the Detroit Red Wings, Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, LA Kings and New York Rangers compiled a 447-330-172 mark in his career.
The 37-year-old Roy, who at 56,711 career minutes is also close to breaking Sawchuck's record of 57,194 minutes. Roy played his first game on February 23, 1985 with the Montreal Canadiens in a relief effort of Doug Soetaert against the Winnipeg Jets.
Roy owns 31 career victories over the Oilers which matches the most he has against any team in the league. He has also beaten the Boston Bruins 31 times.
Colorado, which is 0-1-1 in Denver this campaign, has won two of its last three, but suffered an overtime loss at the hands of the Anaheim Mighty Ducks on Sunday.
Joe Sakic scored twice for the Avalanche, who had beaten the Kings and San Jose Sharks in their previous two contests. David Aebischer made 24 saves for Colorado in his first action of the season.
Sakic sent the game to overtime with his third goal of the season with 9:25 remaining in regulation. The Avalanche had just killed off a penalty and nearly scored while shorthanded as Ducks netminder Martin Gerber had to come up with a big save on Adam Foote from the slot. Just over two minutes later, Sakic snapped a shot from the left circle over Gerber's glove for the tying goal.
Anaheim then picked up the win with 11 seconds remaining in the extra session.
The Oilers enter Tuesday's tilt on a three-game slide and have been outscored 11-6 in that span. Their current string matches their biggest streak from a year ago, as they lost three straight from January 19-23 and March 8-13 last season.
Its most recent setback came on Saturday, when Edmonton was turned back 4-3 by the road-weary Boston Bruins and surrendered a shorthanded score for the second consecutive game.
Anson Carter, Mike York and Steve Staios all scored in the loss for the Oilers. York's tally was his first of the season, as was Staios', which came shorthanded.
Tommy Salo turned aside 21 shots for the Oilers, who are 1-2-0 on the road this year.
Colorado is unbeaten in its last three (2-0-1) against the Oilers and is 23-9-4 in the last 36 matchups.
The Oilers have dropped five of their last six in Denver and are 3-7-1 in its last 11 in Colorado.
