Tampere, Finland (My Sportsbook) - Daniel Briere had a goal and two assists to lead Canada to a 3-1 victory over Sweden at the World Hockey Championships. Briere currently plays for the Buffalo Sabres. Dany Heatley added a goal and an assist in the win, while Mathieu Dandenault of the Detroit Red Wings tallied the other goal for Canada. Heatley, who scored his fourth goal of the tournament, is a star for the Atlanta Thrashers. Goaltender Sean Burke of the Phoenix Coyotes made 39 saves in the win. Peter Forsberg of the Colorado Avalanche provided the lone goal for Sweden, which got 29 stops from Tommy Salo, who plays for the Edmonton Oilers. Canada wrapped up the preliminary round with a 3-0 record to finish atop Group C. The Canadians will face Russia, Switzerland and Denmark in the qualifying round, starting with Friday's game against the Danes. Earlier on Tuesday, Switzerland beat Denmark 6-2 to finish second in Group B. Germany beat the Ukraine 3-1 in Group A, while Latvia dumped Belarus 4-0 in Group C and Austria beat Slovenia 6-2 in Group D. Russia edged the United States, 3-2. The winless U.S. squad dropped to the relegation round against the other fourth-place finishers in the four Groups.
