San Francisco, CA (My Sportsbook) - Kerry Wood pitched six solid innings and Moises Alou finished with a homer and two runs batted in, as the
Chicago Cubs posted a 4-2 victory over the
San Francisco Giants to give manager Dusty Baker a win in his return to Pacific Bell Park.
Baker managed the Giants for the last 10 years and guided the club to the World Series last autumn, but had a strained relationship with owner Peter Magowan and signed a four-year deal with Chicago this off-season.
Baker, who was given a standing ovation after a brief video tribute before the game, received his National League championship ring from San Francisco general manager Brian Sabean.
The Cubs snapped a two-game slide and handed the Giants their season high third straight loss.
San Francisco, which was no-hit in its last game on Sunday against Philadelphia's Kevin Millwood, got a leadoff homer from Ray Durham in the first inning, but left 16 runners on base. Barry Bonds was 1-for-2 with an intentional walk and was hit by two pitches.
Wood (4-1) yielded two runs -- one earned -- on seven hits in six innings. He walked four and struck out eight. Juan Cruz and Mike Remlinger combined for two scoreless innings and Joe Borowski worked the ninth for his fourth save.
Kirk Rueter (2-1) lost for the first time this season. The lefthander gave up three runs on eight hits in six innings.
The Cubs snapped a 2-2 tie with a run in the sixth, as Corey Patterson doubled with one out and scored on a base hit by Ramon Martinez.
Alou led off the eighth with his second homer of the season to give Chicago a two-run edge.
After Durham led off the bottom of the first with his third homer, the Giants went on to load the bases with one out. Wood, though, caught Benito Santiago looking at a third strike and got J.T. Snow on a grounder to second.
The Cubs loaded the bases in the third on a leadoff double by Mark Grudzielanek, a walk to Alex Gonzalez and a single by Sammy Sosa. Alou then grounded into a double play to score Grudzielanek with the tying run.
The Giants again left the bases loaded in the home third when Snow struck out looking and Edgardo Alfonzo flied out.
San Francisco loaded the bases one more time in the fourth, but this time scored a run when Jose Cruz Jr. drew a walk. Santiago then hit into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
The Cubs tied it in the fifth when Gonzalez doubled with one out and scored on a single by Alou, who was then picked off at first to end the inning.
