Opener chance at redemption for Jets, Titans

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -A new season, a fresh start. That's exactly what the New York Jets and Tennessee Titans are looking for Sunday.

Each went 4-12 in 2005, leading to big offseason changes. The Jets found a new coach in Eric Mangini, and the Titans have nine new starters, including center Kevin Mawae, let go by the Jets.

Tennessee linebacker Keith Bulluck sees the first game as a time for redemption.

``It's a clean slate. Everybody starts off 0-0 and may the best team win,'' he said.

Mangini, at 35 the second-youngest head coach ever in the NFL, may have some leeway in taking over the Jets from previous coach Herm Edwards, now in Kansas City.

The former New England defensive coordinator has overhauled the offense and defense, finally settling on Chad Pennington as his starting quarterback after Pennington's recovery from a second rotator cuff surgery.

But he's still looking for a running back to replace Curtis Martin. He hadn't settled on a starter and will use four running backs in his coaching debut.

``It's always fun to get to play in the opener and to really get things going, especially with the time and the effort and the work that you do put in leading up to this point,'' Mangini said.

Jeff Fisher is the second-longest tenured coach in the NFL behind only Pittsburgh's Bill Cowher, but he is busy rebuilding a franchise after two awful seasons.

He is 21-5 against teams making a first visit to Nashville. The Jets are one of only five teams the Titans will play this season with losing records in 2005, and Fisher is happy to be starting at home for the first time since 2003.

``We need to dust the rust off. We need to get back on a roll and create an environment where home-field advantage is good for us, and take advantage of that as a team,'' Fisher said.

Fisher still hasn't selected a starting quarterback. All signs point to Kerry Collins, the 11-year veteran signed on Aug. 29, taking the field first for the Titans instead of Billy Volek.

Rookie Vince Young, the No. 3 overall draft pick out of Texas, is expected to see spot duty on a series or two as a change-up.

``I think all three of those guys present unique problems, and it's a very good decision to have,'' Mangini said.

Having to prepare for three quarterbacks isn't new for the Jets, who spent the preseason watching Pennington hold off Brooks Bollinger, Patrick Ramsey and Kellen Clemens. Linebacker Jonathan Vilma said they practice for the Titans quarterbacks' strengths.

``Vince Young, his strength is to scramble and create a play. Volek is a prolific passer and we know he can get the ball down the field, get the ball out there,'' Vilma said. ``And, obviously, Kerry Collins is a proven veteran and he's been around the league and he's done a good job, so we just have to get ready for all three.''

The Jets' biggest challenge may be protecting Pennington in his first game since he hurt his throwing shoulder Sept. 25 in a loss to Jacksonville.

The offensive line features a pair of rookies in left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson and center Nick Mangold, who replaces Mawae. Pennington said he isn't worried, even though New York allowed 53 sacks in 2005.

``I have full confidence in D'Brick. He's an excellent athlete with great agility and quickness. We drafted him for a reason, and that was to come in here and have an immediate impact on our football team. And I expect him to do that,'' Pennington said.

The Titans have grown up a bit from the team that started seven rookies in 2005, including both cornerbacks. They added experience and speed to a defense that gave up more points than all but three other teams by signing safety Chris Hope away from Pittsburgh and linebacker David Thornton from the Colts.

They got better this week by signing six-year veteran tackle Robaire Smith. But the Titans remain young, and Mawae said that's what makes a strong start so important.

``Given the history of the last couple of years with this organization, you want to win as quickly as possible,'' he said.
