Tampa, FL (My Sportsbook) - The
Tampa Bay Lightning attempt to knot things at two games apiece tonight when they host the
New Jersey Devils in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series at the St. Pete Times Forum.
Tampa Bay will likely, however, have to face a full-strength Devils team, as Jersey captain Scott Stevens is probable for tonight's match after getting hit with a puck during the Lightning's 4-3 victory on Monday. Stevens was struck in the head by a Pavel Kubina shot early in the first period and required 20 stitches to close a cut on his ear.
There have been some hints that the Devils believe Kubina fired the puck at Stevens on purpose.
"It's definitely conceivable," Devils center John Madden said. "Put it this way -- when I was playing in the minors I saw guys intentionally shoot the puck into the bench. I see guys going down on one knee to block a shot and that frustrates a team, so the next time they fire the puck real high as kind of a warning."
Kubina dispelled any accusations.
"I was shooting the puck on net, and at the last second, the puck bounced on my stick. The puck went high," he said. "I was shooting the puck at the net and then going for a change. I would never try to hurt anybody on another team. To say I tried to shoot at someone on purpose is just a joke."
After dropping the first two games in New Jersey, the Bolts rebounded with Monday's triumph, as captain Dave Andreychuk broke a 3-3 tie 6:08 into the third period. Martin St. Louis posted a goal and an assist in the win, while Fredrik Modin and Vaclav Prospal also scored. Goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin finished with 24 saves.
St. Louis scored his seventh goal of the playoffs, which ties him for the league lead with Philadelphia's Mark Recchi and New Jersey's Jamie Langenbrunner.
Monday's decision wasn't as easy as it appeared it would be early on. The Lightning jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period before the Devils responded with a trio of tallies in the second, from John Madden, Grant Marshall and Jeff Friesen.
"You don't want to script it that way, but you find a way to get it done," Tampa Bay head coach John Tortorella said of blowing the lead before winning. "It's another lesson, something we battled through. To come back in the third period, keep our patience and find a way, it's something you can draw on when you get in those situations again."
There was some controversy when Andreychuk scored the winning goal. New Jersey had four forwards and only one defenseman on the ice at the time, after officials ordered Devils blueliner Colin White off the ice following the line changes. New Jersey coach Pat Burns was livid during the play, but his team nearly scored shortly after the faceoff. However, a Madden shot hit the crossbar and Andreychuk went the other way for the deciding marker.
Tampa Bay is trying to mirror the scenario that transpired in its first-round series, when the team fell behind Washington two games to none before winning four straight.
If the Lightning are to complete a similar comeback they will, however, have to get to Brodeur the way they did on Monday. Brodeur finished with 25 saves and allowed more than two goals for just the second time this postseason. In Game 4 against Boston last round he was beaten five times, but rebounded two days later with a 28-save shutout.
Game 5 will be played Friday at the Meadowlands in New Jersey.
