NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -The Tennessee Titans made all of their usual mistakes in a season-opening loss to the New York Jets, and now they have to turn it around in a hurry.
A rebuilding franchise trying to rebound from a 4-12 season lost its fourth straight regular-season game Sunday with a 23-16 loss in the home opener to the Jets.
The Titans hurt themselves with dropped passes, errant throws, missed assignments and penalties - a similar refrain heard after nearly all of Tennessee's 23 losses in 2004 and 2005.
Coach Jeff Fisher said Monday the mistakes are fixable and promises his Titans will bounce back.
They better.
The Titans face the toughest stretch of their schedule with four of the next five games on the road starting Sunday at San Diego, which beat the Oakland Raiders 27-0 Monday night. That's followed by a trip to Miami, the lone home game against Dallas and visits to Indianapolis and Washington.
``Whatever kind of team we are is really fixing to show up,'' tight end Ben Troupe said. ``We've got some really good opportunities coming up. Hopefully, we can step up to the challenge.''
The Titans have only one victory since a Dec. 11 win against Houston, and that was a meaningless preseason game against Green Bay.
They fell behind 16-0 to the Jets, another team coming off a 4-12 season, and had fans booing early and often. Drew Bennett dropped one pass on the first possession near the Jets' end zone, and rookie Vince Young provided a rare boost in his one series before being intercepted.
Bennett said it was good to see the mistakes on film Monday.
``It's also very frustrating to see all the chances we gave away,'' he said.
Kerry Collins, the 12-year veteran signed two weeks ago, started slowly, hitting only seven of 19 passes for 89 yards through the first three quarters, with one of his two interceptions bobbled away by Troupe to start the third quarter.
But Collins went 10-of-19 for 134 yards in the fourth quarter when the Titans scored 16 straight points and tied it with 5:58 left. Bennett said Collins played well, with his few errant throws the result of pressure and hits.
``It's just not fair to pin it on Kerry,'' Bennett said.
Collins accomplished enough despite failing to connect with David Givens on fourth-and-6 within the final minute that Fisher said the veteran will start against San Diego.
``He was in the right spot early every time, which was good to see. He handled the hurry-up offense, the no-huddle offense, handled the two-minute drive, was aware of the protections, was aware of everything,'' Fisher said.
The defense that struggled against the run in 2005 and in the preseason instead gave up 319 yards passing to Chad Pennington, a quarterback coming off two shoulder surgeries in as many years.
But linebacker Keith Bulluck said he likes how his team, featuring four veteran free agents signed in the offseason and defensive tackle Robaire Smith added last week, isn't committing the same mistakes repeatedly. He is looking forward to the next few weeks.
``It's definitely going to be a good challenge to see where our focus is and see if we can go out on the road and win,'' he said.
