(My Sportsbook) - Curtis Joseph picked up his first shutout in a Red Wings sweater on Monday with a 24 save performance over the
Calgary Flames. However, it was his special teams unit that should get the credit for the blanking.
Detroit killed off nine power-play opportunities from the Flames and scored twice while shorthanded to roll to the 4-0 victory.
"Our penalty-killing was unbelievable," Wings coach Dave Lewis said. "A lot of guys worked extremely hard to make sure that the puck didn't go in."
After a scoreless first period, the Red Wings took a 1-0 lead on Chris Chelios' shorthanded goal at 2:52 of the second stanza. Brendan Shanahan's attempt from the low slot was stopped by Jamie McLennan, but Chelios was in the right circle and shelved the rebound just underneath the crossbar.
"Any time you get shorthanded goals," Lewis added, "it throws the opponent off."
Detroit then pushed its lead to 2-0 just 1:28 later on Kirk Maltby's shorthanded tally. Maltby whipped a wrister from the left circle over a screened McLennan's stick.
"I'm not complaining, I've just been fortunate," said Maltby, who has three shorthanded goals this season.
Detroit now has five shorthanded goals on the year. The two in one period tied a team record accomplished several times, most recently against the San Jose Sharks on October 10 when Maltby lit the lamp twice in the first period with the Wings down a man.
Tomas Holmstrom's power-play marker and Darren McCarty's third goal of the season closed the scoring for Detroit, which earned its second straight victory.
"They have really good special teams," said Iginla, who scored 52 goals last season. "That's why they're one of the top teams."
Joseph, who held onto the game puck, was sensational between the pipes, stopping 12 shots in the first period, five in the second and seven in the final 20 minutes for his 37th career shutout.
His best save came in the second period with Calgary on the power-play when he made a diving stick save on rookie Chuck Kobasew's backhander that appeared headed for the open side.
"I've got a few that I've kept from shutouts," Joseph said. "That one over there, first as a Red Wing, that's one to keep."
