San Antonio Spurs hope to oust the pesky
Phoenix Suns on Thursday when the teams meet up at America West Arena for Game 6 of their Western Conference quarterfinal series.
After losing in the final seconds of Game 4, the Spurs regained control of the best-of-seven series with a 94-82 victory in Game 5 on Tuesday in San Antonio. The win gave the Spurs a 3-2 series edge over the Suns, meaning San Antonio can advance to the second round for the third straight season with a victory Thursday.
Malik Rose finished with 27 points and 13 rebounds in Game 5 and Tim Duncan scored 23 and grabbed 17 boards to lead San Antonio over Phoenix. The Spurs led wire-to-wire in the contest despite some valiant comeback attempts by the Suns.
David Robinson chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds in 26 strong minutes off the bench for San Antonio, which led by as many as 24 points. The Spurs, who outrebounded Phoenix by a 53-40 margin, finished shooting 42 percent from the floor.
Shawn Marion scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds to pace the Suns. Amare Stoudemire added 14 points and 14 boards, but was just 2-of-7 from the foul line with a few key misses late in the contest. Anfernee Hardaway scored 16 and Stephon Marbury chipped in with 13 on just 5-of-18 shooting for Phoenix.
San Antonio held a comfortable 54-30 advantage at halftime, but Phoenix came out firing in the third quarter. The Suns opened the stanza with a 19-5 burst to cut its deficit to 10 points. With seven minutes left in the period, Bo Outlaw's two free throws got Phoenix as close as 59-49.
However, San Antonio responded by scoring 13 of the final 17 points in the frame and carried a 72-53 advantage into the fourth.
The Suns never gave up and got as close as six in the fourth when Marbury's bucket pulled them within 85-79 with just 1:47 to play. However, San Antonio hits its free throws late to hold on to the win.
Spurs starting guard Stephen Jackson left the game late in the second quarter with a sprained ankle. He is probable for Thursday's game.
