Glendale, AZ (My Sportsbook) - Lawrence Tynes' 19-yard field goal with 1:36 left in the fourth quarter gave Kansas City its first lead of the game and the win, as the Chiefs came back to defeat the
Arizona Cardinals, 23-20.
Larry Johnson, who keyed the drive with a 78-yard catch, injured his neck after a vicious face-mask tackle by Antrel Rolle, who was flagged to set up Tynes' game-winning chip shot that capped a 13-point fourth quarter for Kansas City.
Arizona had a chance to send the game into overtime as Matt Leinart put together a quick 58-yard drive, but Neil Rackers missed a 51-yard field goal wide right with two seconds left.
"We got off to a fast start which was a good thing," Leinart said. "We stumbled throughout the game a little bit but I think we always have to think positive. I think we made some strides in this game, even though we did lose. I think we did a lot of great things."
Damon Huard threw for 288 yards and two touchdowns on 26-of-38 passing and Johnson hauled in six passes for 106 yards and a score for the Chiefs (2-2), who have won two straight.
Leinart was impressive in his first NFL start, completing 22-of-35 passes for 253 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Edgerrin James rushed for 71 yards on 24 carries for the Cardinals (1-4), who have lost four straight.
"We did some things well, but not enough," head coach Dennis Green said. "We dropped a couple of key passes, and you've got to be optimistic if you expect to win. We expect to win, but we are not optimistic."
Anquan Boldin picked up 71 yards on four catches and a touchdown in defeat.
Trailing 20-10 in the fourth, Kansas City pulled within three when Samie Parker hauled in a 15-yard TD pass from Huard with 9:35 remaining. The catch, originally ruled incomplete, was challenged by the Chiefs and reversed upon further review. The seven-play, 66-yard possession was highlighted by Eddie Kennison's 17-yard first-down reception.
Tynes' 40-yard field goal with 5:06 left knotted the game at 20-20. An interception by Ty Law gave Kansas City the ball at Arizona's 22-yard line, but the Chiefs failed to pick up any yardage before Tynes tied the game.
Tynes' 19-yard field goal capped the scoring and the victory for Kansas City.
Arizona took a 7-0 lead when Leinart connected with Boldin for his first- career touchdown pass, a 49-yard strike over the middle that capped a five- play, 60-yard drive early in the first quarter.
On the Chiefs' ensuing possession, Arizona's Chike Okeafor recovered a fumble by Huard on 3rd-and-9 to give the Cardinals the ball at Kansas City's 41-yard line. After an 11-yard run by James, Leinart hit Larry Fitzgerald on a 10-yard out, and five plays later, Fitzgerald hauled in a five-yard toss in the end zone to give the Cardinals a 14-0 advantage with 6:11 remaining in the first.
Kansas City got on the scoreboard less than three minutes into the second on Tynes' 45-yard field goal. Dante Hall's seven-yard catch on 3rd-and-5 kept the eight-play drive alive.
Huard's nine-yard TD pass to Johnson cut the Chiefs' deficit to 14-10 with 3:26 left until halftime. The quick three-play drive was set up when Scott Player's punt was blocked by Bernard Pollard to give the Chiefs possession at Arizona's six-yard line.
Just before the conclusion of the second, Arizona was able to capitalize on a fumble by Johnson, which was recovered by Eric Green. Rackers booted a 41-yard field goal to give the Cardinals a seven-point lead with 42 seconds remaining.
Rackers' 45-yard boot put Arizona up 20-10 with 10:06 left in the third. James rushed for 25 yards on three carries during the six-play, 42-yard march.
