St. Paul, MN (My Sportsbook) - Brent Sopel scored a power-play goal at 15:52 of overtime to lift the
Vancouver Canucks to a 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild in Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinals at the Xcel Energy Center.
Sopel also assisted on Ed Jovanovski's tying goal late in the third period, as the Canucks won both games in Minnesota to grab a commanding 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. Vancouver can wrap it up and advance to the conference finals for the first time since 1994 with a home victory in Game 5 on Monday.
"There's no reason to relax," said Canucks head coach Marc Crawford. "They are a tough opponent, they are a capable team and they work hard. We recognize how close these games have been."
Matt Cooke also scored for the Canucks, who also posted a 3-2 win in Game 3 on Tuesday. Dan Cloutier made 25 saves in the victory.
Marian Gaborik scored both goals for the Wild, who find themselves trailing 3-1 for the second straight series. The Wild rallied from a 3-1 series deficit to knock off Colorado in the first round, but no team in NHL history has ever come back from 3-1 down twice in the same playoff season.
Manny Fernandez started in net for Minnesota and finished with 27 saves in defeat. The Wild fell to 1-4 at home in the playoffs.
The Canucks scored the winning goal after Minnesota's Filip Kuba took a double-minor for high-sticking Todd Bertuzzi at the 12:11 mark.
The Wild nearly killed off the entire four minutes, but Sopel scored with just 19 seconds left in the penalty when he ripped a shot from above the left circle through a screen and past Fernandez.
"So far it's the biggest goal I've ever scored," Sopel said about his winning tally. "It's playoff hockey. Any way the goals can come. As long as we can have more than them by the end of the night is all that matters."
Earlier during the power play, Minnesota's Darby Hendrickson skated in on a breakaway, but had his shot from in close stopped by Cloutier.
The Canucks finished 1-for-6 on the power play, while the Wild were 0-for-4 with the man-advantage.
Minnesota was clinging to a 2-1 lead late in the third and had a power play after Bertuzzi was called for boarding with 3:35 remaining. Just 43 seconds later, Andrei Zyuzin was whistled for hooking to make it a 4-on-4 and the Canucks tied it with 2:06 left.
"There was only one reason they tied the game up," Wild head coach Jacques Lemaire said. "You guys saw the game. I can't comment on it. That's why this game gets so frustrating sometimes."
Brendan Morrison had the puck along the right boards and fired a pass to the top of the left circle for Sopel, who ripped a shot toward the net. Jovanovski was in front and tipped it past Fernandez for his sixth goal this playoff season.
"We battled back," said Jovanovski. "Those are the kind of games we're going to face in the playoffs."
It was the second time in this series Vancouver scored the tying goal late in regulation and won in overtime. The Canucks also won Game 1 of the series when Cooke scored with 1.2 seconds left in the third period and Trent Klatt cashed in a power play 3:42 into overtime.
The Wild grabbed a 1-0 lead in this one with just 37.1 seconds left in the opening period on Gaborik's first goal of the game. Wes Walz started a rush into the Vancouver zone along the right wing and sent a pass to Jeremy Stevenson, who made a neat backhand pass to an onrushing Gaborik at the left side of the crease. Gaborik quickly flipped a shot over a sliding Cloutier for his third goal of the series.
After a scoreless second period, the Canucks tied the game just 2:09 into the third on Cooke's second goal of the playoffs. Trevor Letowski made a pass from the right boards to the slot for Cooke, who snapped a shot past Fernandez.
Minnesota regained the lead just 1:05 later on Gaborik's playoff-best eighth goal. Walz raced down the left wing, slowed up in the circle and sent a feed across to the right circle for Gaborik, who ripped a one-timer past Cloutier.
