New York, NY (My Sportsbook) - Chicago Cubs first baseman Hee Seop Choi was named NL Rookie of the Month for April. Choi, the first Korean-born position player in the major league, hit five home runs and drove in 14 runs during the month. In 20 games, Choi scored 16 runs and recorded a .436 on-base percentage. He had three doubles, 32 total bases, a .552 slugging average and a .241 batting average. Montreal Expos pitcher Zach Day originally received the award. But further review showed Day had 52 days of service time prior to September 1, 2002 and doesn't qualify as a rookie. Pitchers receiving votes were San Francisco's Kurt Ainsworth, Houston's Brad Lidge, Atlanta's Jung Bong, Arizona's Oscar Villarreal and Colorado's Javier Lopez. The position players receiving votes included: San Diego's Xavier Nady, Arizona's Lyle Overbay, New York's Ty Wigginton and Milwaukee's Scott Podsednik.
