Kent, England (My Sportsbook) - Rookie Sebastien Bourdais captured the London Champ Car Trophy at Brands Hatch, defeating his Newman/Haas teammate Bruno Junqueira by 7.835 seconds and ending Paul Tracy's three-race winning streak.
The victory was the first of Bourdais' CART career.
"It's a dream," said Bourdais. "We got a bit lucky with Paul having a problem, but to win feels really good. It was difficult, but we made it."
"It's been frustrating after the first events," said Bourdais, who won poles at St. Petersburg and Monterrey, but earned just five points.
Tracy, who led the first 55 laps and Bourdais were running one-two for most of the afternoon, promising a great battle to the finish when Tracy's No.3 Players/Forsythe Racing gearbox blew up on the 119th of 165 laps.
Tracy started the race on the pole and led until a slightly longer first pit stop left him in second place. The two racers pulled away from the remainder of the field, until just after the second and last pit stop when Tracy's car began to smoke. A couple of laps later, Tracy's gearbox erupted into flames and the Canadian pulled off the course, his three-race win streak at an end.
"Too bad," said Tracy. "We couldn't get the fuel mileage that Sebastien was doing, so a podium finish was our aim. But I felt it (the gearbox) tighten a couple of laps before, so it was just a matter of time before it blew."
Bourdais, now enjoying at six-second lead over Junqueira, cruised to the checkered flag without a struggle.
Mario Dominguez, Oriol Servia and Patrick Carpentier completed the top-five.
Tracy's 27-point lead before the race began is now just an 11-point margin over Junqueira. Michel Jourdain Jr. (42) is third, followed by Adrian Fernandez (29) and Patrick Carpentier (28). Bourdais' victory jumped the rookie from 16th to sixth-place in the drivers standings.
The next race in the CART championship, the German 500 from the Eurospeedway, is scheduled for May 11th.
