Chicago, IL (My Sportsbook) - The Chicago Cubs activated Antonio Alfonseca on Monday after the veteran closer began the season on the disabled list with a strained right hamstring. In three rehab appearances for Triple-A Iowa, Alfonseca yielded two runs over 3 2/3 innings of action. Alfonseca was hurt when he lost his footing on the wet grass while attempting to field a ground ball on March 18, in a Cactus League contest. The 30-year-old Alfonseca had only 19 saves last season, his lowest total in four years. Alfonseca pitched the first five years of his career with the Florida Marlins before coming over to the Cubs prior to the 2002 season. He was 2-5 with a 4.00 ERA in 66 games last season. In a related move, the team designated pitcher Alan Benes for assignment. In three games for the Cubs this season, Benes went 0-0 with one save and a 2.16 ERA.
