(My Sportsbook) - In a tight
baseball game, the entire outcome can hinge on one error or one poor pitch.
In Sunday's case, it was a series of bad pitches from Matt Kinney that led to the demise of the Brewers at Miller Park as they lost for the seventh time in eight games. The Brewers wasted a 2-0 lead and lost 5-3 to the New York Mets.
Milwaukee scored single runs in the first and third innings to go ahead 2-0. Richie Sexson's 10th homer of the season in the first opened the scoring. Alex Sanchez tripled home Royce Clayton in the third.
Kinney didn't allow a hit until Cliff Floyd's single in the fourth inning. The Milwaukee righthander then retired the next five batters, but collapsed in the sixth. Roberto Alomar led off the inning with a hit, then Roger Cedeno and Mike Piazza both walked to load the bases. Floyd then hit the first pitch he saw over the fence in center field for a grand slam.
"Up two runs, you've got to make them hit the ball to beat you, and I didn't do that," said Kinney. "You've got to make them earn it. I feel bad. I do something stupid and we lose the game."
The Brewers, who lost their first six games of the year, were on the road to respectability after moving within three games of .500 (8-11) after a victory against Houston on April 20. However, Ned Yost's team has been in a free-fall since.
"We're competing every day but we still need to find a way to get a big hit when we need it," said Yost. "And we still need to make a big pitch when we need it."
Unfortunately, for Yost and the rest of the Brewers, things won't get any easier. At 10-21, Milwaukee has the worst mark in the National League. The Brewers begin a six-game road trip Monday night with a three-game set in Chicago versus the Cubs.
WHO'S HOT
Keith Ginter leads the club in batting with runners in scoring position (.400) with five RBI.
WHO'S NOT
Clayton has struggled recently on the road, going 3-for-22 on Milwaukee's last trip, a six-gamer from April 22-27 against Florida and Atlanta.
Geoff Jenkins went 3-for-18 on that same trip and is mired in a 1-for-26 slump overall.
COMING UP
Milwaukee will finish its short road trip in Cincinnati this weekend.
