(My Sportsbook) - Tensions ran a bit high in Monday's game with the
Arizona Diamondbacks, a contest that ended in a 10-1 defeat for the Phillies.
The loss, which halted a two-game win streak for Philly, got a little ugly in the seventh inning when starter Joe Roa threw a pitch behind Craig Counsell, who in the sixth stole second even though the D'backs were already ahead by a score of 7-1.
Benches cleared and a shoving match took place as a result of the altercation between Roa and Counsell, who eventually took first on four balls.
Vicente Padilla was charged with the loss for Philadelphia as he gave up seven runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings. The righthander struck out seven and walked five.
Jimmy Rollins finished 3-for-4 for the Phillies, who were outhit, 11-7. For Rollins, it was his ninth multi-hit game of the season, bringing his batting average to a respectable .281. However, even though he leads the club in runs scored with 24, he has also struck out 26 times and has just a pair of stolen bases.
The Phillies as a group have a mere five stolen bases, fewest in the National League, and have been caught attempting to steal six times. Not only does the team lack speed on the bases, there is a lack of power being generated at the plate as they are third from the bottom of the NL in home runs with just 22 after 33 games.
Taking the mound for the squad on Tuesday is young righty in Brandon Duckworth, who has won his last two starts. The 27-year-old won in Los Angeles last Thursday, surrendering seven hits and a run over seven innings.
Duckworth didn't record a decision in his only start against Arizona. That outing came May 18 last year at Bank One Ballpark, when he threw seven innings, but walked a career-high six batters.
The Phillies are 4-4 on their current 10-game road trip, which concludes with this stop in Arizona. Following this West Coast trip the team returns home for a six-game run against the Houston Astros and the Diamondbacks.
