(My Sportsbook) - Well it only took 64 games, but the
Detroit Tigers have once again won consecutive games, thanks to Monday's 6-1 win over the
Baltimore Orioles.
"There hasn't been too much to be excited about. That's why it's quiet in here," Nate Cornejo said. "We know we've been struggling. It feels good to be able to call it a streak."
"Hopefully, we can take this and build on it."
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Tigers' 64-game stretch between back-to-back victories was the longest in the majors since Seattle also went 64 games in mid-1980.
The Tigers, who were 9-55 since a three-game winning streak in August of last season, picked up a win over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Sunday, then defeated the Orioles for the first time in four tries this season before the smallest crowd ever at Camden Yards on Monday.
"I'm very excited," manager Alan Trammell said. "I hope this continues."
Dmitri Young had two hits, two runs batted in and a run scored to lead the Detroit attack, while Bobby Higginson added two hits an RBI and a run scored for the Tigers.
Cornejo (2-2) earned the victory and has now lasted at least six innings in each of his last five starts. In this one, Cornejo yielded only one run on six hits and three walks in 7 1/3 innings, in which he collected one strikeout.
Detroit has scored 19 runs in its last three games after a tallying just 12 in its last five.
"Up until the last couple of games, everything we hit always went against us," Trammell said. "In baseball, I don't know if things even out, but we've gotten breaks and we're taking advantage of it."
The Tigers still own the worst mark in baseball at 5-25 and are last in the AL in batting with a collective average of .198 and also have a league-low 15 home runs to their credit.
"At least for a couple of games, it seems like things have gone our way," Trammell said. "It might stop the bleeding temporarily, but we have a ways to go."
WHO'S HOT
Higginson and Young are tied for the team lead in both home runs (three) and RBI (11) entering today's action, with Higginson having also worked a team- best 17 walks in 29 games.
WHO'S NOT
Lefthander Mike Maroth, who will get the start on Tuesday for the Tigers, is still searching for his first win of the season and is 0-7 with a 5.66 ERA. He has eight straight losses dating back to last season and has not won since September 16 of last year.
Detroit's pitching staff has a 4.57 ERA, but is second from the bottom in strikeouts with just 141 through 262 innings.
COMING UP
The Tigers continue their three-game set with the Orioles on Tuesday before wrapping up the series on Wednesday. Detroit will then head to Tampa for three games before returning home for a six-game stretch at Comerica Park.
