(My Sportsbook) - The
Kansas City Chiefs needed to rebound from a dreadful performance with a win this week, and were able to do it. Barely.
The Chiefs edged out the visiting San Diego Chargers, 30-27, after blowing a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter. KC looked very impressive in the first half, as it jumped out to a 20-6 edge by the break and still held a 27-13 advantage at the end of 36 minutes.
San Diego came charging back in the final quarter, but it was kicker Lawrence Tynes who had the final word, as he booted a 53-yard field goal to win the game with just six seconds left.
It was a bit of redemption for Tynes, whose miss of an extra point and field goal in the first half eventually helped San Diego tie the game.
"I screwed up in the first half, I missed a field goal and I missed an extra point. We just battled and battled and battled and thank God we came back and got in field goal range and made the kick," said Tynes.
It wasn't an ideal outcome for the Chiefs, but one that they certainly will take. Sure, they would've liked to held onto the big lead down the stretch, but after getting destroyed, 45-7, in Pittsburgh last week the most important thing was to simply get back in the win column.
Adding to the significance of the win was the fact that it came against a divisional opponent. At 3-3, the Chiefs are third in the AFC West, and are now just one game behind the Chargers in the division standings.
"Real important," said quarterback Damon Huard. "It was a divisional opponent at home and I think, after last week, people wondered what Chiefs team was going to show up today."
Another big positive the Chiefs can take from this game was the ability of their offense to move the ball against one of the best defenses in the NFL. Kansas City gained 355 yards of total offense, and 134 of them came on the ground.
Running back Larry Johnson had his best game of the season, as he carried the ball 28 times for 132 yards and two touchdowns.
Most impressive was the amount of points scored against the Chargers. The 30 points were amazing considering San Diego had given up a total of 55 points through the first five games of the year.
Overall, a solid performance from the Chiefs at a time when they desperately needed to make a statement.
HUARD STILL THE MAN
When an NFL team loses its starting quarterback for half the season it's usually a good time to start thinking about next year's draft. In KC this season, a surprising backup QB has allowed the fans to hold out hope for this year.
Huard is in his 10th season in the league, but started just six total games before No. 1 QB Trent Green went down to a severe concussion in the first week of the year.
Since then, Huard has exceeded everyone's expectations, posting a lofty 96.7 passer rating in his five starts and leading the club to a 3-2 mark in that span.
It seemed that Huard's luck had run out last week against Pittsburgh, when he threw for just 162 yards and had a QB rating of 51.8. However, the former University of Washington standout bounced back nicely against the blitz-happy Chargers.
Huard was very efficient against San Diego, completing 15-of-27 passes for 232 yards with two TDs and no interceptions.
The play of Huard has been a pleasant surprise for the Chiefs and it's a good thing because Green isn't expected to be back until mid-November at the earliest.
NOTES
-The Chiefs are 10-2 against the Chargers at Arrowhead since 1995. They have also won all seven October meetings played in Kansas City.
-Tynes' big kick was the second-longest game-winning field goal in Chiefs history, falling behind only a 54-yard boot made by Pete Stoyanovich versus Denver on November 16, 1997.
-Tight end Tony Gonzalez caught a pass in his 90th consecutive game. That's tied for the third-longest streak for a tight end with Mickey Shuler. Ozzie Newsome holds the tight end record with 150 straight games with a reception.
UP NEXT
The Chiefs will be back at Arrowhead Stadium next Sunday when they invite the hobbled Seattle Seahawks to town.
