Colts' Reagor staying on active roster during recovery

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -The Indianapolis Colts are keeping defensive tackle Montae Reagor on the active roster while he recovers from a head wound suffered in an automobile accident.

Reagor was scheduled for surgery Wednesday afternoon to repair a fracture of the orbital bone around his left eye. The injury occurred Sunday when his SUV was rammed by another car and overturned as he was driving to the RCA Dome for the game against Washington.

``I saw him and he was really upbeat and looking forward to it,'' coach Tony Dungy said after Wednesday's practice. ``I'm sure we'll know more after surgery and the start of the recovery period.''

He said he didn't know how long Reagor would be out of the lineup, but the Colts would not seek a roster exemption to add another player in Reagor's place.

``We're hoping right now that he gets back, so we're going to keep him on the active roster until we find out otherwise,'' Dungy said. ``Right now, he's one of our inactive guys for this week.''

The AFC South-leading Colts (6-0) visit West-leading Denver (5-1) on Sunday.

Jeff Nalley, Reagor's agent, said he spent two days in Indianapolis earlier this week.

``Montae's doing great, everything's going well,'' Nalley said. ``But until I hear something further (about the surgery), I'm not going to comment.''

The Colts have refused to comment on the injury since releasing a short statement at Sunday's game, when they said Reagor suffered facial cuts. Colts spokesman Craig Kelley said Wednesday he did not know whether the team would provide an update after the surgery.

Reagor was not wearing a seat belt in the crash, which police said could have lessened the extent of his injuries.

Reagor was driving near the Colts' practice facility when a car turned into his path, striking the driver's side of the SUV and causing it to flip, Indiana State Police said. The driver of the other vehicle was cited for failure to yield.

Since joining the Colts as a free agent from Denver in 2003, Reagor has started 45 games and had a career high 5 1/2 sacks last season.

Anthony McFarland, who came to the Colts in a trade with Tampa Bay last week, started Sunday's game in place of Reagor and had two tackles.

The Colts also will be without safety Mike Doss, who was placed on injured reserve and will be out rest of the season after tearing a knee ligament against the Redskins. The Colts re-signed safety Dexter Reid in his place.

Reid, waived in September, spent last season with Indianapolis after playing for New England as a rookie.

The Colts also expect to have Pro Bowl safety Bob Sanders back against the Broncos. Sanders missed the past four games after arthroscopic surgery on his right knee.
