Turku, Finland (My Sportsbook) - A favored Canada squad squeaked out a 3-2 overtime win over Germany in its quarterfinal matchup at hockey's World Championship in Finland on Wednesday. Edmonton Oilers defenseman Eric Brewer guided home a shot from the point on the power play, beating German goaltender Robert Muller just 37 seconds into the overtime period. Muller made 31 saves on 34 shots in the contest. Canada scored the first two goals in the contest, with Brewer's Edmonton teammate Ryan Smyth notching the first. Smyth, who tied James Patrick's Canadian record by appearing in his 40th career World Championship game, beat Muller on a wrap-around shot on the power play mere minutes into the contest. Buffalo Sabres center Daniel Briere followed in the second period, scoring his fourth goal of the tournament on a deflection of a shot by Oilers defenseman Cory Cross. Less than five minutes into the third, Germany's Lasse Kopitz finessed a rebound of a Stephan Retzer shot past Canadian goaltender Sean Burke, making the score 2-1. The Phoenix Coyotes netminder stopped 28 of 30 shots from the Germans. Germany knotted the game at two with less than six minutes to play in regulation, with Daniel Kreutzer pouncing on a turnover in the Canadian zone and beating Burke with a rising shot. In other quarterfinal action today, Slovakia beat Switzerland 3-1, with Slovak captain Miroslav Satan of the Buffalo Sabres netting two goals. Later, the Czech Republic takes on Russia and the host Finns match up against Sweden.
