Baltimore, MD (My Sportsbook) - The Baltimore Orioles have placed catcher Brook Fordyce on bereavement leave, effective following today's afternoon game against Detroit. Fordyce, whose father passed away earlier this week, is expected to miss this weekend's series in Kansas City and will likely rejoin the team for next Tuesday's game in Chicago versus the White Sox. Fordyce, who turned 33 on Wednesday, has split time behind the plate with Geronimo Gil for the Orioles this season and is hitting .239. The Orioles announced they will fill Fordyce's roster spot by purchasing the contract of catcher Robert Machado from Triple-A Ottawa on Thursday. Machado hit .424 with two homers and nine RBI for the Lynx. Baltimore also announced they have transferred pitcher Erik Bedard from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list. He is rehabbing from ligament replacement surgery and will miss the remainder of the season.
