Trenton, NJ (My Sportsbook) - New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter began his minor league rehab assignment on Wednesday for Double-A Trenton and went 1-for-3 with a single. Jeter is recovering from a dislocated shoulder he sustained on opening day and is expected to play five games for the Thunder. He is hoping to rejoin the Yankees next Tuesday against Anaheim for the start of a homestand. "It was just good to get out there," Jeter said. "Just to play again felt good. I hate watching, period. It's been long enough." Jeter reached on an error in the first inning, grounded to shortstop in the third and singled to left in the fifth. He was then lifted for a pinch-runner. In the field, he also fielded three chances without difficulty. Jeter was injured in the third inning of the season-opener at Toronto after a collision at third base with Blue Jay catcher Ken Huckaby. The 28-year-old Jeter was running on a pitch to Jason Giambi, who hit a tapper to the mound. With the Blue Jay infield in a shift toward the right side, Jeter raced toward the vacated third base and Huckaby, sprinting from home plate to cover the bag, took a throw from first on the run and crashed into Jeter, who was sliding head-first. Huckaby's shin guards slammed into Jeter's shoulder. Tests determined that surgery was not necessary and Jeter went to Tampa to rehab the injury. Last season, Jeter hit .297 with 18 homers and 75 RBI over 157 games.
